Google Wave in 10 Minutes

Experiencing eLearning

Lots of people have written about Google Wave, but I haven’t really had time to watch the full 80-minute demo. If you’re looking for a shorter version, this 10-minute video shows the highlights and some of the possibilities without requiring the full time commitment of the full preview. I’ve been using Google Docs to collaborate with SMEs for over two years now, and it’s great for a lot of things.

Could animations hurt learning? » Making Change

Making Change

A recent study suggests that the common habit of “building&# information on a slide can interfere with learning. The researchers used Camtasia Studio to create two presentations on information security. The audio narration was the same in both presentations. The visuals were the same, too, except one presentation used an average of 3.4 animations per slide to make bullet points, words, or images enter at different times.

What Sports Teach Our Kids and Why Video Games are Better.

Kapp Notes

Violence at a Youth Hockey Game. Introduction Recently I appeared on a local radio talk show to speak about some of the benefits of Video Games for education. It is a popular topic for radio talk shows because it is somewhat controversial and many people have strong opinions on the topic (not really based on fact but strong opinions never-the-less.) You can listen to the show and see some of the interesting comments at the link Educating through video games -- Radio Smart Talk, Tuesday, June 23

Making Your L&D Department Meaningful & Relevant

Performance Learning Productivity

Many Learning & Development managers spend a lot of their time thinking about ways in which they can make their departments more effective and provide real value to the organisation. The question is usually ‘what can I do to ensure that the CEO or Director views L&D as a strategic business tool and not another also-ran support function’. It’s a good question to ask.

The Corporate Moodle: A Tipping Point?

Learning Visions

Richard Nantel of Brandon Hall recently posted about average LMS prices. A ‘low-cost’ LMS starts at an average of $58K. That’s the low price. Which is still a whole LOT of money. And “in times like these…” Why pay for a pricey LMS when you can Moodle or Drupal or Sakai ? Why do companies continue to pay huge dollars for products that are now being offered for free?

ASTD ICE 2009 -Impressions

Web Courseworks

I’ll confess that I may not have been at the ASTD conference every day this past week, but I do have some impressions of the event I’d like to share. I was pleasantly surprised at the large turn-out (unofficial estimates are somewhere around 8,000), which was comprised of a large contingent of international attendees and probably a good amount of people networking for a job.

Social Media Conversations

Tony Karrer

This post is just a quick reminder of the beauty of interesting new social media conversations and social media relationships. Ken Allan and I have had several interesting exchanges via our blogs and around the eLearning Learning site. I'm not even sure what I would call Ken – it's somewhere in the peer, colleague, friend space. I've never met Ken and I don't think we've had a real-time conversation (apologies to Ken if that's not true).

My Portfolio

Experiencing eLearning

Tom Kuhlmann’s post from last week about why everyone should have an e-learning portfolio motivated me to put mine together. In the past, I’ve always emailed a few samples to prospective employers rather than having a comprehensive portfolio. That did allow me to be less worried about privacy, but it didn’t give me a good way to explain what I was doing with each of the samples.

Malcolm Gladwell: All about Spaghetti Sauce and Dosas

As I listened and watched Malcolm Gladwell's video, the truth of what he was saying hit me with an almost blinding flash. I suddenly saw all those ubiquitous "dosawallas" in their small stalls inside large malls or with handcarts on the roadside selling dosas that ranged from the traditional masala, sada, mysore masala, mysore rava to the absolutely innovative Chinese dosa stuffed with noodles, chilly masala dosa ladened with chilly sauce, spring roll dosa, cheese masala dosa, chilly cheese deli

Does Deliberative Practice Lead to Quick Proficiency?
