Synthesis: In order to convey the appropriate meaning, the storyteller must first know the context scenario of its audience. Meaning is shaped by context. In order to know the context, the eLearning developer must first understand the culture and history of its audience. __ I define meaning as the reference point to which a learner connects an idea or knowledge to understandable applications.

Well let’s start by thinking about what “old fashioned” learning is? “Old-fashioned” learning is being taught or trained – that is having all you need to know neatly packaged up in a course or programme or workshop or e-learning course. So I signed up to The University of Edinburgh’s E-learning and Digital Cultures course on Coursera. It has just kicked off, and one of the resources that we have been pointed to in the first week is Zumbakamera’s short animation, Bendito Machine III.

Why are we shying away from one of the most powerful learning tools in the learning designer’s arsenal? – the ability to tell stories. by Lori Smith If you've spent any time using Captivate's new Pretest and the Branch Aware settings, I think you will agree that they are very cool. However, if you've used either feature, you have probably noticed that you cannot have a playbar in the published lesson. It's not a big deal if you don't need the playbar, but what if you need to give your learners the ability to mute/unmute the audio?

I’m working on a project with a partner, and have this really sharp ID working with me. My role is to be guiding the design, not doing it, and it’s working well. The thing I see, however, is emblematic of what I’m seeing much more broadly: the dissociation between the designer and the learning experience. For groups of 10 or more, it was a standard practice to bring in a backup trainer. The role of the backup trainer was to assist any students who might have fallen behind the instructor, or simply assist those students in need of a bit of extra help.

I've found gauges a creative way to illustrate anything from progress through a course or presentation to positive to negative value scales. There are some relatively easy ways to build a gauge using shapes, but one of the fastest (and easily editable) ways I've found is to use Charts.

Don Norman (disclaimer, my PhD advisor and mentor) has had a string of important books, starting with his stellar Design of Everyday Things (tops my ‘recommended books’ list for designers). His latest, Living with Complexity , is not as landmark a book as that, but it has some very astute thinking to present. The book, as the title implies, is largely about how complexity isn’t bad, it’s necessary, and the real issue is about designing to manage it.
