Kapp’s Gamification for Learning and Instruction

Karl Kapp’s written another book, this time on gamification , and I certainly liked his previous book with Tony O’Driscoll on Virtual Worlds. This one’s got some great stuff in it too, and some other ideas that raise some hackles. Let me get one of the quibbles out of the way at the start: I hate the title “The Gamification of Learning and Instruction” (to the point I previously wrote a post arguing instead for ‘ engagification ‘).

Future of Vocational Training Likely to Be Online

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Thursday announced a White House proposal to significantly reform the way vocational training is funded and run — a move that’s likely to rely heavily on online training and e-learning. The proposal seeks to reauthorize — and beef up — the Perkins Act , in which the government pays for vocational and “career technical education” (CTE) programs, by pumping an extra billion dollars into a competitive grants program.

If you are attending the ASTD International Conference in Denver May 6-9, download and start populating the ASTD Events app - Android or iOS (iPhone/iPAD) available. You don't have to carry around a paper schedule! Only drawback I see is I loaded the app on both my iPhone and iPAD and it looks like they don't sync up. Features include: Native universal app : Great for iPAD and no wifi connection required to access the conference program, visual schedule or animated maps.
