Seven Ways to Use the iPad for Workplace Learning

Upside Learning

The iPad is here. After all the hype, which it didn’t quite live up to, there was a lot of commentary web-wide on whether it’s suitable for elearning, or a specific type of learning. Here at Upside our camp is divided, there are iPad lovers and there are iPad baiters. The lovers are typically Apple fan-boys who are crazy about anything Apple, so their devotion to any bit of technology that Steve Jobs throws into the market is taken for granted.

What Gets Measured Gets Done.or Not

The Performance Improvement Blog

"What gets measured gets done." That quote, often attributed to Peter Drucker, is used frequently (I have used it many times, myself.) when talking about performance improvement. However, it would be more correct to say, "Some things that get measured get done." We measure student academic performance in schools, but it doesn't improve the quality of teaching and schools for most kids.

Writing and the 4C’s of Mobile

Clark Quinn

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m writing a book on mobile learning. My only previous experience was writing Engaging Learning , where the prose practically exploded from my fingers. This time is different. The prose actually does flow quite easily from my fingers, but I find myself restructuring more often than last time. This is a bigger topic, and I keep uncovering new ways to think about mobile and new facets to try to include.

Graffiti at Upside Learning

Upside Learning

A large blank white wall is an invitation for creative individuals to express themselves. Some call it graffiti, some call it art, all in all its great fun. We had just such a wall at our offices in Pune. We decided to make the best of it and let graphic designers and artists from the team have a go at it. The results speak for themselves. There was no theme, no predetermined style, only the artist’s imagination at work.

When Your SME Goes MIA

Integrated Learnings

By Jay Lambert. At lunch today, someone was discussing problems that instructional designers frequently face while working with subject matter experts (SMEs). Don't get me wrong; there are many wonderful SMEs out there. But unfortunately there are also enough of the other variety that you see a lot of 'what to do when your SME.' type articles. In a previous post on this blog, Pointing to the Five Moments of Learning Need , we've already talked about the SME who wants to include everything, and I

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

This company, that for the past two decades has been the benchmark for quality, has suddenly had severe damage done to its worldwide reputation and probably to its market share. Toyota seemed to be doing everything right in terms of high performance. Employees were taught “ The Toyota Way ”, a set of efficiency and quality principles that has been the envy of competitors and now is being adapted to a variety of different industries.

He compares the feedback that’s had from 3 types of session that he’s run, a standard presentation, a set of stories and a facilitated discussion actively involving participants. His conclusion is that he gets the highest happy sheet scores when participants can get away with passively listening to him.
