Organizing Content: PPT, Index Cards, Other Methods?

Experiencing eLearning

On one of my recent projects, I had a series of videos to intersperse throughout a course. I had an outline in the design document, but when I started actually developing it, I realized the structure wasn’t quite right. I was struggling a bit to figure out how to organize the pieces. I ended up putting all the “chunks” of content into boxes on a PowerPoint slide and dragging and dropping until I was happy with it.

Something all learning pro’s should do

E-Learning Provocateur

Learn a language. I don’t mean a programming language (although the theory probably still holds). I mean a bone fide foreign language like French, German, Japanese or Mandarin. By going outside of your comfort zone, you stimulate your brain into new realms. But more importantly, you experience once again what it’s like to be a novice learner.

Active and Passive Learning in Organizations

The Performance Improvement Blog

Many of the typical methods of learning in the workplace make the learner a passive recipient of knowledge and skills. Employees are asked to read, watch, or listen to information being dispensed. The method might be entertaining, interactive, and of their own choosing, but fundamentally these methods are passive for the learner. Another approach is to make the learner an active creator of knowledge and skills.

Making the Transition from PhD Student to Corporate Employee

Living in Learning

The world of academia can be a very insular place. As a result, many people who have had great success in post-graduate studies are unpleasantly surprised at how difficult the transition to corporate life can be, even after they have obtained their PhD. This is natural, as even those who work while attending some of the most demanding and best online PhD programs have not yet experienced the strictures and tedium of corporate management for 8-10 hours a day.

X-based learning: sorting out pedagogies and design

Clark Quinn

It’s come up in a couple of ways how my (in progress) activity-based framework for learning is related to other models, e.g. performance-based learning. And, looking around, I am reminded that there’s a plethora of models that have overlap. I’ll try to sort them out. This will undoubtedly be an ever-growing list, as there seems to be X-based learning where X = anything , and I’m sure folks supportive of their approach will let me know ;).

Reimagined Learning: Activities elaborated

Clark Quinn

I’ve been reflecting on the new learning model I proposed earlier , and want to share some elaborations with you. In this case, I want to elaborate on the notion of activities, and some associated properties. First, I think it’s important to recognize that gradually, learners will take more and more ownership of choosing activities. If you’re an adult past college, you choose (with, perhaps, some guidance and support) what professional development you do: you choose books to

Reimagined Learning: Content & Portfolio elaborated

Clark Quinn

In a previous post I laid out the initial framework for rethinking learning design, and in a subsequent post I elaborated the activity component. I want to elaborate the rest a wee bit here. Two additional components of the model around the activities were content and then products coupled with reflection. One of the driving points behind the model was to move away from content-driven learning, and start focusing on learning experience.

Writing & Grammar: One Word or Two?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Jennie Ruby    I came across this error in a heartfelt book review: "It is a painful acceptance of the solitude and the loneliness of each and everyone of us." When the Learner is the Teacher, Do We Need Instructional Designers?

It’s a new world out there for the Instructional Designer. It’s an entirely different canvas, with new colors on the pallet. It’s no longer about producing 3-ring binders, or monolithic eLearning. It’s about harnessing the new ways of learning that are enabled by a new breed of technology, and a cultural shifts in how we use it. When designing for mLearning, we need to put ourselves in the shoes of the user who is walking around with a very powerful tablet and/or smart phone.
