First Impressions of Twitter

Experiencing eLearning

I finally signed up for Twitter last week after resisting for quite a while. Part of my resistance/reluctance to join was that this just seemed too out there for the audience I work with and our online facilitators. I’m willing to fight the battles to include blogs and wikis and chat and a bunch of other stuff, but this seemed like too much to throw at them.

ASTD ICE 2009 -Impressions

Web Courseworks

I’ll confess that I may not have been at the ASTD conference every day this past week, but I do have some impressions of the event I’d like to share. I was pleasantly surprised at the large turn-out (unofficial estimates are somewhere around 8,000), which was comprised of a large contingent of international attendees and probably a good amount of people networking for a job.

Traditionally at Upside, we’ve always used one Saturday every month for training. Typically, this training is designed for functional groups and is followed by a creative activity where there is cross-functional participation. The Upside Learning staff wanted a change from routine functional training which could be boring. So we decided to introduce a fun activity for this training day.

Does Deliberative Practice Lead to Quick Proficiency?

Tony Karrer

In Social Media Conversations , I posted the story of how this post came about. Briefly, I sent Ken Allan the following question: Any thoughts on how deliberative practice relates to becoming something less than an expert. It seems like it should be applicable to all levels of achievement, but everything I'm reading is the study of becoming an expert.

Informal Learning Part 2 from Jay Cross: Informal learning is like a bicycle ride

ID Reflections

Jay Cross compares formal learning to a bus ride--where everyone is travelling together, in almost the same direction, and will, on an average, reach the same destination at around the same time. This is great for novice learners. Informal learnign, on the other hand, is like a solo bicycle ride. I can change my own direction, go where I want, stop when I want to and take a break.

The Big Question: Time Spent

Upside Learning

The Big Question posed on Learning Circuits this time is thought provoking - Where is your time spent? It causes one to pause and reflect on our state of being. Where am I spending my time? I’d say my waking time is spent on three distinct areas: Work – quite obvious since I have to feed the family and myself. Currently consists mostly of consulting internal development teams on instructional approach and design, and the design of interactions and user experience.

What would Dr. Seuss say about online communities.

ID Reflections

An excellent presentation that drives home the point using "nonsense rhymes." The appeal of nonsense rhymes dates back to our childhood, and this creates an instant feeling of identificaiton, thus keeping us hooked to the slides. This also increases the recall factor manifold. The rhymes reminded me strongly of Edward Lear's "Owl and Pussy cat" in their pea green boat.

We participate and therefore we are

ID Reflections

As John Seely Brown says, ~Instead of “ I think therefore I am ”, it is “We participate and therefore we are” ~ Social learning has always been around. And has probably been one of the most effective means of learning as Bandura and Vygotsky had said long back. We turned toward our colleague or friend to ask for help when stuck. We have built communities of practices to facilitate and construct our own understanding.

Audio in eLearning: Do American and British customers differ?

Upside Learning

I came across this interesting post by Cammy Bean about cultural differences in the use of audio in eLearning. Her colleague, Mark Harrison, believes that audio is used a lot less in eLearning in the UK than in the US and she is exploring the reasons for this. That caused me to wonder about our own experience. My gut feel ( subconsciously backed by over 200 projects our company has delivered for 75+ clients almost equally spread between the US and the UK ) suggested this may not necessarily be t
