Learning Management: What does a Training Company need an LMS for?

Upside Learning

Training companies the world over are changing the way they operate and the services they offer customers. An important one is the inclusion of eLearning (or online training) as part of their core offerings for existing and new customers. Such an offering is not purely driven by a cost-saving strategy on the customer’s part, but is also due to the growing acceptance of eLearning as an effective way of delivering training.

Glitchy Failure Captions in Captivate

Experiencing eLearning

Recently I’ve been working on a Captivate tutorial to help our facilitators better understand the thought process of troubleshooting a specific part of their course setup. This is basically a software simulation with an avatar & audio. Most slides have a clickable area within the LMS interface. This click box has both a hint caption and a failure caption.

The Evidence on Online Education

Clive Shepherd tweeted a link to this research report: The Evidence on Online EducationThe study found that students who took all or part of their instruction online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through face-to-face instruction. When I was recently asked to teach a class on how to use Google Calendar I started thinking about how to integrate it with Lectora. Having a calendar in your training can be useful for a variety of reasons.

Great dialog between Harold Jarche and Stephen Downes around Harold's PKM process … Stephen Downes wrote in response: … what does the concept of a ‘method’ here imply? That there is a ‘best’ way to manage knowledge an information? Isn’t that what we’ve learned there isn’t ? It’s a pick-and-choose sort of thing: the way we manage information has a lot to do with the information, and a lot to do with who we are and what we want the information for … Harold responded with Other PKM processes where

The Future of Learning is Not Now!

Living in Learning

I realize this may stretch the pretext of a cute catchphrase, but it seems appropriate this afternoon. The future of learning truly is NOT now because we are not ready for it…nor are we at a state of readiness even if it were now. The catalyst for making this statement about the future of learning stems from my good fortune and honor to participate in a virtual discussion yesterday as a panelist in, “The Future of the Business of Learning”, sponsored by Learn Trends, ISA and Training Magaz

Standards and success

Apparently, Google has recently opined that the future of mobile is web standards. While this is wonderfully vindicating , I think there’s something more important going on here, as it plays out for a broader spectrum than just mobile. I’ve been reflecting on the benefits that standards have provided. What worked for networks was the standardization on TCP/IP as a protocol for packet transmission.
