A few days back I watched a pretty awesome video by Nick Shackleton Jones about the Affective Context Model. Nick told a great story about the importance of the affective context - the emotional metadata that allows us to connect and remember various pieces of information. People learn by doing. We're still stuck in the classroom paradigm.

As a facilitator, I realise that I'm interested in some of the things that no one really cares about. These things however are the things that make a very silent difference to a group's collaboration and learning experience. For example, I like to come in early in the morning to ensure that a training room is set up in a pleasant clean fashion.

We explored the waterfall approach towards elearning development in a prior post of this series. As you will notice in the above representation of the model, the issues are: Too much time gets spent in upfront design and planning when all of this is quite likely to change. A few months back, Harold Jarche wrote a very interesting article about sense making with Personal Knowledge Management (PKM). Harold suggested a model that he uses to manage his personal knowledge and stay on top of his social media intake. strongly suggest that you also look through the webinar he did on PKM at the LearnTrends conference.
First things first. could really get into trouble with my wife if she reads this post. Let me explain. was having a conversation with one of my friends about elearning and the associated costs and I almost laid a wager to say that you could produce quality elearning in a relatively short time on a pretty low budget. to work with! If you've followed this blog long enough, you'll know that I am big on presentation skills. completely agree with McKinsey when they call presentation, the killer skill. If you're a salesman, you can make an impressive pitch.
There's a shift happening and its all around us. We may not be a part of that shift yet, but I'm sure each one of us will soon be. We might want to think that technology is changing the way we collaborate and yes that's true! But there's a lot changing in the way we think as well. Let's see how we're changing! Which brings me to my next point.

Most would agree that Twitter was one of the social networking phenomena of 2008, and has enjoyed exponential growth in popularity. The microblogging tool has obvious potential to be used in formal learning, both in traditional online classroom settings and - through mobile technologies - for mobile learners. In a recent conversation, I was asked what I thought about twitter as a learning tool. Over the course of the past few years I’ve moved from saying “I don’t get it” – to feeling like it’s a good addition to my Learning Tool Set. But I also think that there’s a lot more help now around how to make effective use of Twitter as a learning tool.
