Ten years ago I had lunch with Margaret Ford and she outlined a new business idea to provide great leadership and management content to trainers, learning and organisational development professionals and GoodPractice was launched. The set up up was perfect! was at one of the seminars at Learning Technologies last week and the speaker opened with the question: “How many of you are planning to implement informal learning this year?&# About a third of the room raised their hands, 30 people, that’s a lot of implementation this year.
The big question this month is about the value of social media in learning and, once again, it tackles a problem that’s being experienced by learning professionals attempting to move beyond being a traditional, classroom focused training function. Last week I had the great pleasure to video a Skype conversation with Jay Cross where we discussed our recent survey on ‘How Managers Learn’, learning, informal learning and performance. As ever when you talk to Jay or read his work he gets you thinking and sparks ideas. This time was no different! Learning and Performance.

The Learning Circuits Big Question this month asks what skills and knowledge are required for learning professionals in a learning 2.0 world. To a great extent, the answer to this depends on what kind of remit a learning professional has, or should have. How people learn … really. Performance drivers. Business knowledge. Technology.

Most would agree that Twitter was one of the social networking phenomena of 2008, and has enjoyed exponential growth in popularity. The microblogging tool has obvious potential to be used in formal learning, both in traditional online classroom settings and - through mobile technologies - for mobile learners. In a recent conversation, I was asked what I thought about twitter as a learning tool. Over the course of the past few years I’ve moved from saying “I don’t get it” – to feeling like it’s a good addition to my Learning Tool Set. But I also think that there’s a lot more help now around how to make effective use of Twitter as a learning tool.
