Blogging in a Walled Garden

Experiencing eLearning

Kylemore Abbey Garden. One of the features of Sakai that our team was looking for in a new LMS is a blogging tool. I admit some significant improvements in usability are possible in this tool. However, it does give us the option of blogging within the system. Previously, we’ve used tools like Wikispaces and Edublogs, but we’ve had a number of requests for internal tools that don’t require a separate login and location.

Iconoclasm 2.0

E-Learning Provocateur

I’ve been seeing a lot more social media icons on websites these days, and you may have noticed that I’ve recently added a few to this blog. Why? Well, I figure that if I’m serious about the use of social media for collaborative learning and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, then I should do what I can to encourage participation. However, not everyone shares my view.

ASTD Follow-Up

Tony Karrer

Last week at ASTD TechKnowledge , I did a keynote on Work Literacy and eLearning 2.0, an online Q&A Session for the Virtual Conference and a session on using Web 2.0 Tools for eLearning. You can find the handouts for the last session via TK09 Handouts. I thought I'd capture some links and thoughts around these sessions. Learning from Our Kids In my keynote, I mentioned a Fourth Grade Wikipedia Update.

(New) Monday Broken ID Series: Objectives

Clark Quinn

This is the first in a series of posts on some broken areas of ID that I will be posting on Mondays. The intention is to provide insight into many ways much of instructional design fails, and some pointers to avoid the problems. The point is not to say ‘bad designer’, but instead to point out how to do better design. The way I’ve seen many learning solutions go awry is right at the beginning, focusing on the wrong objective.

This is likely my last post in the Tool Set series. This post likely will be quite a bit different because I'm convinced that most people have used different search tools enough that they are pretty comfortable with their current search behaviors. My intent here is to possibly expand the options for the average knowledge worker to be able to search a bit better than they do today.

I’m on the Board of Directors for an educational not-for-profit that has had almost 30 years of successful work with programs in classrooms, nationally and internationally. However, 5 years ago or so when I joined, they were doing almost nothing with technology. Since then I’ve been working systematically to get them to the stage where they’re leveraging technology not just for education, but for the organization.

What Goes in the LMS?

Tony Karrer

Recently I posted on Learning Materials asking the question - What Goes in the LMS? The responses via comments were truly fantastic. In fact, they were too fantastic to have them "buried" as comments. And I wanted to add some of my thoughts, so I'm post again on this topic. Oh, and, as always, the answer is "it depends" - but let's try to come up with a few suggestions.

2009: the year of bad measurement?

From the Coleface

Having been at Learning Technologies, I got the sense that the e-learning industry is maturing to the point where there’s little radically new. However, what we will see in 2009 is even more pressure being exerted on L&D departments and suppliers alike to get more from less. This will inevitably lead to more effort on measuring results as a means of prioritising scarce resources.

Economic Impact

Clark Quinn

The Learning Circuit’s Blog Big Question of the Month is “What is the impact of the economy on you and your organization? What are you doing as a result?&#. Heavy topic, but appropriate for the times. I’ll answer two-fold: myself, and what I see for clients. First, the impact: for some organizations it appears mostly an issue of scale, trying to do more with less, but for others it’s more cataclysmic; layoffs, no ability to secure capital for activity, no new business.

There are various reasons that we give for locking navigation. The two most common are that some sort of regulation requires it or we want to make sure that the learner doesn’t skip through the course.

Can 'Competencies' be Taught?

bozarthzone

I tend to agree with Marcus Buckingham ( First, Break all the Rules ). Do you? What's been your experience with "competencies"? "Competencies are part skills, part knowledge and part talent. They lump together, haphazardly. Consequently, even though designed with clarity in mind, competencies can wind up confusing everybody. Managers soon find themselves sending people off to training classes to learn such 'competencies' as strategic thinking or attention to detail or innovation.
