The Return Of Video To eLearning

Upside Learning

Josh Bersin cites YouTube Videos as one of the best learning tools available in his session at the HR Technology Conference last week. I agree and see a bigger role for videos in the learning mix. Ten or fifteen years ago, video was used by most organizations for training. They would have a library of VHS tapes and a screening room where employees could watch those videos.

Ensuring a “Serious Game” Meets Its “Serious” Objectives

Kapp Notes

Here are some thoughts on what needs to be done to develop an instructional game that meets the objective of actually teaching something to the player. To ensure that the goals of a serious game are met, the first priority is to design the game to focus on those learning or social objectives from the beginning and not as an afterthought. One can’t bolt game elements onto traditional learning or social education and expect that to be an effective, interesting or even instructional game.

Does #Gamification Have Advantages Over Traditionally Designed Instruction?

Kapp Notes

Gamification has several definitions but the one I find most compelling is one that involves elements of games beyond just points, badges and leaderboards. A definition that includes using elements like challenge, story, role-play, feedback–what I call “deeper” game elements. When examined that way, one major advantage that gamification has over many traditionally designed e-learning courses and classroom lectures is the high level of interactivity, the expectation of a difficu

Enterprise Learners v Entrepreneurial Learners

Jane Hart

A few days ago I made a posting in which I shared an animated video of a keynote presentation by John Seely Brown in which he talked about the concept of the entrepreneurial learner, and today I’d like to follow up on that post. To recap, and to explain the term, “enterpreneurial learner”, JSB says: “This does not mean how to become an entrepreneur.

Opening the Black-Box to Evaluation

The Performance Improvement Blog

Black-box evaluation is measuring the effects of a program or service without examining the nature of that program or service. It is evaluating what people think and do after the intervention (e.g., training, classroom education, e-learning, coaching, policy change) and then attributing that behavior change or lack of change to what happened in the “black box”.

Moving from Training to Performance Support

Jane Hart

“Not all training sessions are effective. Sometimes training is the wrong solution, but it is the only thing available, and is exactly what the boss or client asks for. Learning professionals who only know how to design training are missing out on many other opportunities to improve work performance. For instance, most learning happens informally on the job.

Push the envelope further

Clark Quinn

When I run my game design workshop, one of the things I advocate is exaggeration. And you need to take this to heart in two ways: one is why it’s important, and the other is how to get away with it. That is, if you want learning to be as effective as possible. When individuals perform in the real world, they’re motivated. There are consequences for failure, and rewards (tangible or not) for success.
