Memory is not what you thought it was. “Immediate memory&# holds onto things for 30 seconds. “Working memory&# can hold on for a couple of hours. But a “Longterm memory&# takes 10 years to fully stash. And what comes out is the result of a mind-as-food-processor, not some logical derivative of the original at all.

Call me old fashioned, but when I buy a plane ticket from Lufthansa, I expect to fly on Lufthansa. Here I am in Koln, boarding a puddle-jumper plane on the first leg of a flight back to San Francisco. In my book, this is not a whole lot different from ordering le poulet at a fine French restaurant and receiving a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. They are both poulet , but the restaurant has tarnished its brand and let down a customer.

Klaus Henning: SAP decided to raise their consulting rates in Europe 15% across the board a few months back. Customers would have none of it. SAP understood the mechanics but was oblivious to cultural issues.

Our study group in Aachen visited the headquarters of BET (Buro fur Engergiewirshaft und Techniche Planung GhmB), a group of 40+ energy consultants and economists. BET’s offices are carved out of the interior of a 150 year-old church. This space was created with collaboration in mind. Two levels of easily-accessible individual offices behind big windows invite visitors inside.

Travel can be grueling. I just endured a nine-hour flight from Munich to San Francisco in a minuscule seat in the back of a Lufthansa Airbus. We were over Greenland when a fellow who was walking down the aisle in my direction turned to a passenger a couple of rows ahead and smacked him atop the head. I figured it was a couple of pals horsing around.

Isaac Newton (1643-1727) and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz (1646-1716) invented calculus at the same time but independently of one another! ( wikipedia ). When Newton and Leibniz first published their results , there was great controversy over which mathematician (and therefore which country) deserved credit.

Uta and I are spending a few nights in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the Inn of the Anasazi. Seventeen years ago, a repository for state records was converted into this perfectly charming hotel a couple of blocks from the historic center of Santa Fe. These guys know how to do it right. Our room is tastefully furnished with ersatz antiques. I just cut off the fire in our in-room kiva and extinguished the candle on the decorative wall sconce because I’m weary after a long bath in the deep tub.

Three days ago, my land line went dead. That evening I saw a phone company guy in a cherry picker working on the phone pole across the street. I figured he’d fix the problem. He didn’t. I went into my default mode of dealing with craziness. I asked myself, “What am I supposed to learn from this?&#. I decided I’d learned that I no longer need a poorly performing, monopolistic phone company to provide my business phone service.
