Ensuring a “Serious Game” Meets Its “Serious” Objectives

Here are some thoughts on what needs to be done to develop an instructional game that meets the objective of actually teaching something to the player. To ensure that the goals of a serious game are met, the first priority is to design the game to focus on those learning or social objectives from the beginning and not as an afterthought. One can’t bolt game elements onto traditional learning or social education and expect that to be an effective, interesting or even instructional game.

Does #Gamification Have Advantages Over Traditionally Designed Instruction?

Gamification has several definitions but the one I find most compelling is one that involves elements of games beyond just points, badges and leaderboards. A definition that includes using elements like challenge, story, role-play, feedback–what I call “deeper” game elements. A Conversation with Michael Allen–ADDIE, SAM & the Future of ID

For those of you who may not know, Michael W. Allen is a leader in the field of design, developing and delivering online instruction. He is the author of seven book including a best-seller on creating effective e-learning and in has received ASTD’s Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance Award in 2011. He founded the computer-based course authoring tool Authorware in 1984 and later formed Macromedia through a merger which was then bought by Adobe Systems.

Seven Interesting and Different Slidedecks on #Gamification

Here are Seven unique slide decks from Slideshare.net each giving a different take (visually and contextually) on the concept of gamification. The first is from Sebastian Deterding: 9,5 Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Gamification from Sebastian Deterding. The second was presented at a conference by Kyle Findlay and Kirsty Aberts. It’s got great game graphics and provides results of some research they conducted in an online community with adding gamification elements.
