It's updates from people in 140 characters.". It's like describing this painting by Chuck Close by saying "it's got all these little blobs of color". True, but doesn't really capture the experience. Using Twitter as a read-only medium is like using the telephone as a listen-only medium. | GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS OCTOBER 5, 2009 There’s nothing rapid about Rapid eLearning The term ‘rapid elearning’ has befuddled me for some time. Beth's reference to "Rabid eLearning" in her recent blog post got me thinking about this topic once again. Given that I came from one of the pioneers in the industry (eHelp) which brought RoboDemo, now Adobe Captivate, to market (which btw we purchased from a guy selling the previous incarnation out of his garage in Australia), you would think that I am a true believer in the concept. The fault merely lies in the interpretation – not the tools themselves. Hey, this is easy! can crank out training in no time! Not so fast Sparky! | | | | | | | LEVERAGING LEARNING JULY 30, 2009 What Training Costs Part I: Converting Content from ILT to WBT The pricing of training development often involves a lot of mystery and a little bit of smoke and mirrors, especially for web based training. There is plenty of research available on pricing, but it’s typically hard to find, quickly out-dated, and often too general to be helpful. And if you ask three different vendors for a quote, you’re likely to get three different (often very different) price points. So how do you figure out what something should cost? How do vendors get from industry benchmarks to actual bids? Is there an easy way to evaluate whether or not a quote is reasonable? And so on.) | LEVERAGING LEARNING FEBRUARY 17, 2010 Seven Tips for Bringing the Rapid Back to Rapid eLearning My colleague Jon continues to tally up the hits for his tell-it-like-it-is blog post There’s Nothing Rapid About Rapid eLearning. While he does a great job laying out the realities and timelines of “rapid” eLearning development, I thought a follow-up offering some tips and tricks for rediscovering the rapid might be in order. So here’s a starter list. Got some favorite tips and tricks of your own? Would love it if you’d add them to the comments. The Tips. Provide pre-defined not blank-slate solutions : Drive-throughs have value-meals for a reason. If possible, show examples. Please. Please. | LEVERAGING LEARNING MAY 25, 2010 The 4 Cs of Extended Enterprise Learning and Performance At VMG we spend a lot of time thinking about what drives enterprise learning and performance. Although each of our clients and partners has unique problems to solve, each solution we create contains some mix of the following four elements: Let’s look at each of these, starting at the bottom. Control. Corporate training has long been about control: You must complete this course. Content. Context. | LEVERAGING LEARNING APRIL 27, 2010 The Secrets of SaaS Training: Delivery The other day I wrote about designing SaaS training , and how it differs from traditional models. Today let’s explore best practices for delivering SaaS training. Delivering SaaS Training. In most cases, when learning folks talk about training delivery, they speak in terms of modality. That That is, is it a live, in-person instructor led event (ILT)? live, virtual event or webinar (V-ILT)? A self-paced web-based training event (WBT)? A self-study course (independent work done through a workbook)? The idea is to determine the best modality for a given audience and a given purpose. | | | | | | | | | -
LEVERAGING LEARNING | THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2010 The Secrets of SaaS Training: Design SaaS applications are different in the way they are purchased, consumed and supported, but at the end of the day, they are just tools people use to get things done. There is nothing fundamentally radical or even new about the purchase, consumption, or support models, but taken together, they offer a paradigm shift that is already upending the traditional software marketplace. Similarly, training for SaaS is different in the way it is designed, delivered, and sold, but at the end of the day, it is just a tool people use to learn. Delivering SaaS Training. LEVERAGING LEARNING | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2009 Five Warning Signs That Your Training is Expendable All training has a problem it is trying to solve and a customer it is trying to please. Whether you work with internal or external customers, have a mandate as to what to create, or simply design it yourself, ultimately someone is paying the costs to develop the training. They’re doing so because they expect the course to meet a business need. If it doesn’t, or if they’re not convinced that it does, your courseware, your budget, and potentially your job, could be expendable. Here are five common warning signs that you may be missing the mark. Faster horses. Figure out what’s really needed. MORE >> -
LEVERAGING LEARNING | FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2009 If We Can Crowdsource Products, Why Not Learning? People are bringing new products to life in a mere fraction of the time it typically takes to get form idea to reality, trusting completely to the wisdom of the crowds to develop both the concept and the market simultaneously. Companies like Threadless and Quirky have developed whole business models around the concept that we can create valuable products through a community forum. So why not create valuable knowledge? To do this, there’s a mental leap of faith that has to take place, one that traditional autocratic businesses often choke on. Here’s what I do know. know about learning. MORE >> -
LEVERAGING LEARNING | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2009 What Training Costs Part 2: Building ILT and V-ILT Courses Webinars should not take any more time or money to create than face-to-face instructor-led training (ILT). There, I said it. Call me a heretic, but anyone who thinks that designing and developing virtual instructor-led training (V-ILT) is more akin to developing asynchronous online learning (WBTs) is either confused, misinformed, or outside of their comfort zone. The effort to produce synchronous learning is the same, whether it is for a face-to-face delivery, or a web-based delivery. There’s a huge push right now to transform ILT courses to V-ILT courses, for obvious cost saving reasons. MORE >> -
LEVERAGING LEARNING | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2009 Day 2/Take 2: Key Takeaways from the Rest of Learning 2009 Conference AND More Twitter Newbie Revelations For me, day 1 of Learning 2009 primarily focused on great ideas, and day 2 focused on great examples of real training solutions. Day 2 kicked off with an inspiring interview with Captain Chelsey B. Sully” Sullenberger III , he of successfully-made-emergency-landing-on-the-Hudson-river fame; and moved from there into sessions on case studies: Julie Clow from Google presented an excellent example of a light-weight, agile learning program for internal audiences leveraging Google tools, discrete, right-sized content pieces, and a mobile delivery platform.
