The Non-Training Approach to Workplace Learning

Jane Hart

The Training Department (aka the L&D dept) has traditionally focused on designing, developing, delivering and managing instruction – in the form of courses, workshops, e-learning and other training events. In fact “a course” in some form or other has now become the de facto solution to any performance problem in an organisation – despite the fact that many of my Internet Time Alliance colleagues (and others) have spoken about its… Read the rest.

Prezi: a big step from Powerpoint

Challenge to Learn

The worst presentations you can attend are those where the presenter reads out his PowerPoint to you without adding anything to it. The root of the problem is of course the lack of presenting skills from the presenter, but PowerPoint doesn’t really help. It forces the presenter in a linear one-dimensional mode, often bringing out the worst of the presenter.

eLearning: Let the Learner Decide the Path

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by AJ George  "It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education." -- Albert Einstein After attending  Edward Tufte's seminar (that I wrote about last week) , it got me thinking about being authoritarian with an audience. Tufte admonished the use of the "slow reveal" in PowerPoint presentations, suggesting instead that if you must use bullet points (he advises against using them altogether), present all your information--clearly and at once. I don

Reactions to the non-training approach to workplace learning

Jane Hart

Following my recent post on the case for a non-training approach (NTA) to workplace learning and the launch of my NTA website, I’ve received quite a bit feedback and read a number of blog posts and comments about it. So I thought I would plot all these reactions on the learning technology adoption curve that my Internet Time Alliance (ITA) colleague, Harold Jarche and I produced last year (which is… Read the rest.

Thoughts on Creating a Virtual Lab

Kapp Notes

One instructional technique used frequently in the simulation/game arena is the creation of a virtual lab. Here are some thoughts on creating an effective virtual lab. A good method to create a virtual simulation is to create something with different levels to allow learners different entry points into the simulation. The first level would be a demonstration in which the simulation performs the task being requested and shows the learner what needs to be done.

Leadership and Health Care Reform

The Performance Improvement Blog

The Obama administration’s health care reform legislation will change incentives, which is badly needed, but it will not improve the quality of care unless an integrated, team-based approach also becomes the way health care professionals do business. This kind of approach is what the legislation refers to as ACO (accountable care organization). However, to be successful, such an approach will require health care professionals, especially doctors, to learn new competencies and form new attitudes

A convenient untruth

Rigid curriculum, lack of resources and bad student behaviour may also be high on the list for many educators. For me, the worst enemy is bad theory. Bad theory, when accepted without challenge, can lead to bad practice.

Beware who's selling informal learning

Clive on Learning

There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that historically we have underplayed the importance of informal learning, whether that's experiential, on-demand or social. I'm equally convinced that, with the proliferation of great social networking tools and the ever-increasing confidence that learners are displaying when it comes to managing their own learning, informal learning should rightfully play a central role in our future learning architectures.
