The Genericization Of Content

Upside Learning

This proliferation of devices is having a strange ‘dumbing-down’ effect on a lot of the eLearning courseware being created right now. We are starting to ‘genericize’ content, it is starting to look the same, feel the same, and function in a similar manner. Whatever happened to those interactive engaging pieces of courseware that made one go ‘cool, I like this’; not much of that to be seen.

Unlearning?

Clark Quinn

Recently, there’s been a lot of talk and excitement about unlearning, and it’s always rubbed me the wrong way. Because, frankly, unlearning physiologically isn’t really an option. So I thought I’d talk about the cognitive processes, and then look at what folks are talking about. Learning has been cutely characterized as “neurons that fire together, wire together” And that’s really it: learning is about strengthening associations between patterns (whic

Dashe & Thomson

I was asked recently to define situations where eLearning is a smart management decision over the same course in an instructor-led training (ILT) format. There is a tremendous amount of information available about the advantages of eLearning as a delivery method, but there is not a whole lot devoted to this particular question. I decided to poll some of my colleagues to get their take on this question.

Realizing the Potential of the Tin Can API

Integrated Learnings

By Joseph Suarez. Each time a major eLearning authoring tool or LMS vendor announces they are (or will be) supporting the Tin Can API , the eLearning community can be heard giving a simultaneous cheer and moan. Why would the “ next generation of SCORM ” cause such a mixed reaction? Here's my interpretation. Cheers: In the short term, Tin Can support is perceived as a good thing because it means organizations will theoretically have the capability to migrate from SCORM to what's being promoted as

Why I don’t like WIIFM

Usable Learning

This is excerpted and expanded from a post that I wrote for the Tin Can blog . We’ve talked about WIIFM (What’s in it for me?) for years – it’s one of those things you always hear that you need to include in learning experiences to persuade your learners to pay attention. I’ve started to think that’s a really unsatisfactory view of the world – most of the people I know don’t need a sales pitch to do their jobs, or to learn something to help them do that.
