Google Wave in 10 Minutes

Experiencing eLearning

Lots of people have written about Google Wave, but I haven’t really had time to watch the full 80-minute demo. If you’re looking for a shorter version, this 10-minute video shows the highlights and some of the possibilities without requiring the full time commitment of the full preview. I’ve been using Google Docs to collaborate with SMEs for over two years now, and it’s great for a lot of things.

What Sports Teach Our Kids and Why Video Games are Better.

Kapp Notes

Violence at a Youth Hockey Game. Introduction Recently I appeared on a local radio talk show to speak about some of the benefits of Video Games for education. It is a popular topic for radio talk shows because it is somewhat controversial and many people have strong opinions on the topic (not really based on fact but strong opinions never-the-less.) You can listen to the show and see some of the interesting comments at the link Educating through video games -- Radio Smart Talk, Tuesday, June 23

The Corporate Moodle: A Tipping Point?

Learning Visions

Richard Nantel of Brandon Hall recently posted about average LMS prices. A ‘low-cost’ LMS starts at an average of $58K. That’s the low price. Which is still a whole LOT of money. And “in times like these…” Why pay for a pricey LMS when you can Moodle or Drupal or Sakai ? Why do companies continue to pay huge dollars for products that are now being offered for free?

Get Your Paws Off My Training Budget

Living in Learning

Don’t you wish you could say that? Don’t you wish leadership could understand and value the contribution that your training department makes? Don’t you wish that justifying your existence did not become a distraction to your departmental mission and divert precious time and resources away from being productive? Why can’t they see it? Why is it that in every organization I’ve worked for…or with…they ask these same questions?

My Portfolio

Experiencing eLearning

Tom Kuhlmann’s post from last week about why everyone should have an e-learning portfolio motivated me to put mine together. In the past, I’ve always emailed a few samples to prospective employers rather than having a comprehensive portfolio. That did allow me to be less worried about privacy, but it didn’t give me a good way to explain what I was doing with each of the samples.

I was working with a student intern the other day. We reviewed his first attempt at a rapid elearning course. For this review, we focused on the course’s visual design. Overall, he did a great job, especially for someone just starting out. However, he made some mistakes that are common to many of the courses I see. I thought I’d do a quick rundown of what they are and provide some tips on how to prevent them. 1.

Clive on Learning

You wouldn't hire an interior designer only to inform.them that you've already chosen all the colour schemes and furnishings; you wouldn't engage an accountant and then explain to them the way you wanted them to process your figures; you wouldn't employ a fitness trainer and then tell them what to include in your workout; you wouldn't buy a dog and then insist on doing all the barking.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

No one seems to be able to agree on what a PLE is. I've heard several people complain recently that they can't find enough published research in the area of PLEs either.
