Wow, had a great 3 days at DevLearn, met some absolutely wonderful, fascinating and brilliant folks. Saw a bunch colleagues and friends, and had lots of fun in the Gamification Workshop. Last week [October 25th] I had the distinct privilege of sitting in on the Tin Can API break-out session that was presented by Aaron Silvers of ADL. I’m not sure of his exact title, but his role was in a leadership capacity on the Tin Can API project. His business card says “the Beard”…and while that was accurate, I still don’t know his real title. Given ADL was also the birth mother of SCORM, I walked in and sat down with a preconception or two that this was SCORM in a new dress.

I am an advocate for performance support. It just makes sense, (even if the term itself is a bit confusing and not very exciting.) But as with all technology-enabled learning solutions that have crossed my path over the past 35+ years, the most critical success factor is not the technology at all. It is the people who will use and support the use of this stuff: the workers (unfortunately referred to as ‘end-users’) and their managers.

The Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee (AICC) and the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative have agreed to collaborate to improve and solidify the Experience API (formerly referred to as “Tin Can”), ensuring its viability for the aviation industry and other communities served by AICC.

In 2011, 67 American workers died on the job from electrocutions. Most of these deaths could have been prevented by better work practices, such as identifying and controlling hazards in the workplace, or implementing a standardized training program designed to instruct employees in best practices. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

A new term was recently added to my lexicon: “real-time labor market data.” It came from research I am conducting about how community colleges work at building courses and programs that align with employers’ demands and the needs of regional economies. A subset of this research is the argument that our nation’s community colleges are not educating students to meet labor-market demands.
