Testing Games vs. Teaching Games

Kapp Notes

There is an important difference between games that teach a learner how to do something and games that test what a learner already knows. Too often those two types of games are confused and an instructional designer or other person places the wrong type of game into the curriculum. Testing Games are games where the learner already needs to know the information to be successful.

The Future of Workplace Training

The Performance Improvement Blog

Paul Matthews, in a blog post titled, “The future of training is not training,” argues that workplace training needs to be about building capability not delivering courses. He writes: Many people in training seldom stop to think why they are doing the training. The logistics and hassles of keeping the training department running are sufficient to fill up their days and obscure the real purpose.

The moot point of MOOCs

E-Learning Provocateur

Some people are head-over-heels in love with MOOCs. Or perhaps more accurately, the idea of MOOCs. They believe the new paradigm will democratise – and even revolutionise – education. Others, however, consider MOOCs a passing fad, an unsustainable business model, yet another a buzzword destined for the scrapheap like so many before it. I happen to stand somewhere in the middle.

Are You Thinking About Learner Anxiety?

Kapp Notes

Looking through my old (1987) “Instructional Technology: Foundations” book I came across an interesting paragraph about anxiety in learning. It was in a chapter by Sigmund Tobias called “Learner Characteristics” in the paragraph, he discusses the role anxiety can play in learning and I thought that even though we usually think of children in school having anxiety around learning, I think adults do as well.

The role of the L&D function IS changing.

A recent press release about Bersin by Deloitte’s new industry study, The Corporate LearningFactbook® 2013: Benchmarks, Trends, and Analysis of the U.S. Training Market included the following finding from the study. “ The L&D footprint continues to shrink. Although many training teams added staff during the year, these additions were outpaced by faster growth in learning populations.

How Mobile Devices are Influencing User Interface Design

“Dear Doctor, I’m concerned about Stanley. He has developed an unusual growth between his left thumb and index finger. The growth is the size of an average hardcover book, yet thinner. One side is silver and emblazoned with the image of an apple. The other glows with an iridescent light. Stanley does not appear to be in any pain. Nevertheless, I know he’s concerned since he stares and taps at the growth constantly.

Starting from scratch

Clark Quinn

From a conversation with my ITA colleagues, talking about the (self-imposed) death of L&D that Charles wrote about, Jane wondered what we might do if we were starting from scratch. I decided to take this on, thinking about an org that was already in operation, with it’s goals, processes, and practices, and what I might do if I were to come in and get it going (with the support of the executive team to do what I thought was right).

Value of Investment (VOI) vs. Return on Investment

Kapp Notes

Perhaps the constant effort to find the ROI of higher education or even training programs is mis-placed, should we be asking ourselves if an alternative exists? As the competitive landscape of higher education shifts and the training industry changes, using a measurement like Return On Investment (ROI) as the only guide for evaluating information technology investments like an LMS or an audience response system is a mistake.
