Putting DESIGN into Learning Design

I've written previously about my use of the term 'Learning Design' rather than the more regular 'Instructional Design'. Briefly, I approach my work from the perspective of designing a way forward for learners to take them from where they are now to where they would like to be. To me this put the learner at the centre of what I do, so therefore I am a person who DESIGNS learning.

The Village of Twitter

In an earlier post on Informal Learning I made the observation that social networks allow people to create their own villages of learning. What I meant by this is that people once had only one source of knowledge, the village. Even when a visitor brought new ideas, this new knowledge was shared amongst the group. The industrial revolution introduced the benefits of scale to industry, further enhanced over the last 100 years by the structure introduced through Henry Ford's production lines.
