I received an inquiry about resources that would help instructors who are about to move into teaching online courses. It made me immediately think back to my first experience with an online session. It was the first ever public session for Placeware - a virtual meeting software company that was much later acquired by Microsoft and became Microsoft Live Meeting. Because it was their first ever public session and my first ever online session neither of us knew what we were doing. The topic was roughly (surprise) New Technology for eLearning. They had 100 people participating. hope this is useful.

I was talking with a startup that has an existing audience and now want to provide a monthly subscription for access to training to this audience. They will only convert a portion of the audience to the new service. The learners will get access to webinars, recorded webinars, videos, and other online content that they will author separately. They don't really have a tech team, so going with a hosted solution that would live at a subdomain would be best, i.e., subscribers would go to: learn.company.com in order to sign up, pay, and get access to webinars, content, etc. Why Do We Have an LMS?

I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. You can find a long list of tools broken into authoring tools, games/simulations, quiz/test tools, social media, delivery platforms, tracking and whether they support mobile. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source. Here’s some of what I pulled out. Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) for Managing Course Assets

I received an inquiry from a reader at a large company that is continuously working on large projects with lots of course content running around. They have Articulate courses, classroom courses, SharePoint sites, etc. They have an LMS but not an LCMS. And they currently manage all of this using what I’ve seen at a lot of companies: network drives, naming conventions, some SharePoint. Of course, it’s still a bit of a mess. Sound familiar? long time ago, the goal of an LCMS was to help to manage all of these kinds of assets. This is valuable for large scale authoring and translation of content.

Flash Controversy Continues - Is It a Good Choice for Development?

Garin Hess wrote a post 5 Reasons Flash is NOT dying.give me a break! and it seems like my recent post Mobile Learning and the Continuing Death of Flash got him a little fired up. I am fed up with people saying Flash is dying. That it's old technology. That HTML5 is the ultimate replacement. That it shouldn't be allowed to go forward. Come on! Give me a break! Garin has some good arguments on why he likes Flash as a delivery mechanism. Probably worth visiting his blog to read them. This could be a new authoring tool, an aggregator, the course playback mechanism, a recruiting tool, etc. Why not?

LCMS - Warehouse and Authoring

I’ve received some good feedback on my post Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) for Managing Course Assets. One thing is pretty clear, LCMS tools have really headed towards a kind of super Authoring tool and there's a related but quite distinct need for support for a Warehouse. The need for the Warehouse - keeping track of learning content assets across the organization has its own set of requirements. Know anyone who can contribute to this? This in very common across all larger companies. My larger customers faced the same problem and use LCMS to fix it. So what does this mean.

One of our colleagues came to me with a particular challenge, and I'm not sure I have a good answer, nor do I know specifically how to go about finding an answer. I'm hoping that readers can weigh in on both aspects: (1) specific thoughts or suggestions on LMS products that might fit and (2) how do you get answers to questions like this? Use Case: Becky Bonds is an RN with the responsibility for coding the plan of care in her office. She has acquired HCS-D credentials and must complete continuing education to maintain the certification as well as nursing continuing education for her RN license.

I just read George Siemens post Will online lectures destroy universities? He makes the point that despite articles like Why free online lectures will destroy universities – unless they get their act together fast : Statements like “universities are obsolete” or “universities are dying” are comical. And untrue. Universities are continuing to grow in enrolment and general influence in society. Calling universities obsolete while we are early on in the so-called knowledge economy is like declaring factories obsolete in the 18th century just as the industrial revolution was taking hold.

I'm working on an article around the use of ROI and metrics in eLearning. I did a quick search for resources and here's what I found. thought it would be worth posting this list here. Kirkpatrick's Level 3: Improving the Evaluation of E-Learning Level 3 evaluations measure whether the there was an actual transfer of learning to the actual work setting.
