More Digital Natives

Upside Learning

There’s more talk about Digital natives going around; Jeremiah Owyang blogged from the Corporate Social Networking Conference in Amsterdam. Time and again, this talk about Digital natives and the millenials comes up, and there still isn’t much agreement about the key issues at hand. There seems to have been a fair bit of Interesting talk at the conference: “By age 20, kids will have spent 20,000 hours online –the same amount of time a professional piano player would have spent practicing&#

Accountability for Business Results

Performance Learning Productivity

UK politicians have been in the spotlight over the past few weeks with their creative use of the parliamentary allowance scheme. “Flipping” was one common way that some found to maximise their allowance income. This involved declaring one of their homes - either in their constituency or in London closer to the House of Commons - as their main residence, then claiming all manner of expenses against their second home.

Twitter: The #1 Tool for Learning

Upside Learning

There’s been quite a bit written about how Twitter can be used for learning. A few interesting reads are listed at the end of this post. I personally believe that Twitter is a great tool to get access to knowledge and information—provided you follow the right people. It’s also a great place to get answers—better than Google searches sometimes—if the right people are following you.

In response to Twitter Quitters - 40% leave after one month.

ID Reflections

Why am I writing about Twitter? Because it is a powerful social networking tool that is fast becoming a social learning tool. The connotation of the word social is changing from one of "connect" to bring into its fold other meanings like collaborate, learn, share, give, participate, hear, be heard, ask, be answered. This is not a litany in praise of Twitter--it is in support of all social networking sites (SNS) that will help us to collaborate and build collective knowledge.

The primary reasons for doing the eLearning Tour was that it is hard to see examples of what is being done by fellow eLearning professionals and get a sense of the patterns that exist. As part of pulling together the tour, I asked for contributions from this blog and from Learn Trends. I received quite a few responses. Far more than I could accommodate.

Adobe Flash: Now With Face Recognition

Upside Learning

Time and again, we have seen Flash being extended in unique ways by leveraging the power of AS3. We caught something in the feeds yesterday that truly took us by surprise – face recognition using Flash. Check out the video here. By using the AS3 Marilena library Squidder built this unique application that can recognize faces via object recognition. I’d hazard a guess that this is a great first step for cheap biometric identification enabled through camera enabled devices using a browser.

Twitterfall - letting the web work for you

E-Learning Acupuncture

Why reinvent the wheel? If you need to use the Internet to do research on a particular topic, you can leverage other people’s research efforts using social media tools (i.e. the stuff of Web 2.0). There are several social media tools that can help you. One example is Twitterfall. It’s a free web service that taps into the proverbial ’river of data’ generated by the Twitter data stream and fishes out for you messages that fit a custom search that you create.
