Let us take a trip back to the late 90s and 2000. The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. Now, go back to the late 90s into the early 2000’s, with instructional designers developing WBT courses (Web-Based Training) and e-learning developers. After all, making one stop won’t be enough. Dinosaurs roamed.

Standards provide several benefits. After initial efforts in 1993, and bursts of energy circa 2000 and again in 2004, we’re seeing a new resurgence of activity and interest. You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. The outcome: VHS won. Learning Standards.

Most of it came, via 3rd party providers, or what we referred to as “boutique shops” – think custom development (fee-based) that someone, company, government, institution, and so forth hired to create a course or courses. ISP (Internet Service Providers) fees were high. Oh, and access wasn’t free. Blackboard.

If you are an Authorware fanatic missing the old days, you are still going to miss it – because while these capabilities are being added to tools they are still not at the level of Authorware. Back in the early 2000′s I remember offering my end users avatars with our learning platform. Audio Editing.

The large increase in college students during the 50’s, had institutions scrambling to provide course supply for the increased demand. Hypercard and Authorware both launched in 1987, making it easy to create multi-media programs. Corporate Training in the 2000 's. The computers were great, but software was lacking.

For those of us who can remember, back in early 2000, products like Authorware were essential to building courses. Authorware was a great product, but its learning curve was extremely difficult and user friendliness was debatable. In reality, it often is not the case. Authoring Tools (Rapid E-Learning).
