We can over-do the play in learning: "We can find ourselves stressing action and creativity at the expense of scholarship and information. " Zull recommends a balanced approach. We risk trivialising learning."

Instead Matt pointed me to a book that he gave to all the instructional designers at Epic when he was head of design there - it's called e-Learning and the Science of Instruction , by Ruth Clark and Richard Mayer (Pfeiffer, 2002). Matt inferred it was a classic and, seeing that this one had passed me by, I had to get a copy.
