With the growth of tablet devices, authoring tools are having to re-invent themselves, yet again. It’s nothing new —just another step in the continual evolution we’ve seen since the early 1990s, when authoring tools were first introduced to help eLearning professionals create and deliver learning.

Click the bottom half of the Track Changes tool, and select Change Tracking Options. If you choose By author , Word automatically assigns each person who comments on the document a different color. At the bottom of the Styles pane, click the Manage Styles tool. You find this from the Review tab.

When the copies came back, every change was marked as coming from "Author." In Word 2003, that function is found under Tools > Options > User Information. In Word 2007, that is found under Office Button > Word Options > Popular. Some of his reviewers were working in Word 2003.

by Jennie Ruby Track Changes in Microsoft Word is an indispensible tool for editing, but it is not the best tool for the job in every editorial situation. Even if a reviewer of the edited document wanted Power Point to be printed with a space, you would not allow it, because PowerPoint is the proper name of the software.

Endless confusion resulted when she tried to discuss editorial changes with authors--Is that on page 2? Acrobat picked this number up from the desktop publishing software used to create the document. . Need help with Acrobat's many editing tools? or page 21?

When WordPerfect came out with their "redlining" feature, I jumped on it, but stick-in-the-mud reviewers and authors balked, claiming the marked up text was hard to read. Up through Word 2003, moved text appeared as deleted in one place and inserted in another. Acrobat's graphical mark-up tools?
