When WordPerfect came out with their "redlining" feature, I jumped on it, but stick-in-the-mud reviewers and authors balked, claiming the marked up text was hard to read. Word 2007 and 2010 solve that with an elegant green double-strikethrough and double-underline format with links between the moved from and moved to locations.

In Word 2007 or 2010, the Track Changes shortcut appears at first to be absent, but if you right-click the status bar, you get a menu in which you can choose to add the Track Changes shortcut. Once that tool is on your status bar, you can turn Track Changes on and off without a trip to the Review tab. .

Both Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat have a "Send for Review" tool. Here is an overview of the two programs' tools for reviewing documents. The Microsoft Word Send for Review tool requires Outlook as your email program. The Comments tool allows for more extensive discussion of the document.

That fact leaves us at square one unless we do learn the marks, educate our colleagues about them, use some online tools, or do all three. Even when using Acrobat to communicate corrections, I find that I, and many other editors, like to grab the Pencil tool and just make the standard proofreading mark right on the PDF.

At this stage, I like to type the labels into Microsoft Word or into specialized outlining software so I can drag and drop the labels until I am satisfied with their order and hierarchy. If you have used outlining software, such as Mindjet's MindManager, export your outline to Word.

Weve played that same tug-of-war: audio that reads the text on the screen is the equivalent of a presenter reading her slides, and yet people expect audio, even when its just a voiceover. on just about all slides.
