I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source.

Of the "e-learning technologies used", roughly 60% of employers are using an LMS, 40% are using virtual classrooms, chat rooms and discussion groups, games and sims, >30% are using open source tools (!!!), 20% mobile learning, blogs and wikis, 15% podcasts.

Whereas if higher risk (development of entire course), people more likely to use non-open source tools. Nothing shocking, but some interesting tidbits. My notes here.

One was a Reuters piece from June 2007 that said that 26% of SL users are women. All women. For example, I just Googled "second life women."
