PLE - PWLE Discussion Contiunes - Corporate vs Personal and IP Rights

Tony Karrer

This continues the discussion being had around PLE/PWLEs - see More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments for a bit of recap. Tom Haskins has a series of interesting posts - on the topic: Enterprises that love PLE's Traits for creating PLE's at work The P in PLE First, I have to jump on the comments in these posts by Stephen Downes and Michelle Martin. Clearly this is a different use of PLE's than those outside the firewall, for free rangers, and for learning from everything of personal interest. Stephen tells us. and Michelle says. Just do it.

Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment

Tony Karrer

What this has come to make me realize is that for the vast majority of knowledge workers (including myself), there should be no separation between my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my Personal Knowledge Management system, and my day-to-day set of tools that enhance my knowledge worker productivity. Certainly PLE and PKM would seem to be too limited, right? Central to my PLE is the people I work with and the applications I use for communication with those people. In it, he points out that a stepping stone to Enterprise 2.0 As I compose this blog post, which am I doing?

The PLE discussion grows larger

Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development

Michele over at the Bamboo project created a fabulous post (a new post) gathering some of the best elements, discussions, etc, of the current PLE conversation. PLEs were a hot topic at the eLearning Guild Conference in Boston, and its no surprise to me that they continue to be a hot topic. The other story: After I posted a quick review of Stephen Downe's presentation at the Guild conference on PLEs, Stephen pointed back to Michele's site.we all know what that does to your numbers ;-) This encouraged Michele to rethink and repost her thoughts, and links regarding PLEs.

PLEs - what are we talking about here?

Clive on Learning

Donald Clark left the following comment on my posting about personal learning environments: "The term PLE is, in itself, suspect. Environment - the PLE isn't the environment, the internet is." Personalised - OK but stating the obvious. Learning - well no, it's more about a two-way, working window - learning is at best a small part of it, a by product, not it's sole purpose.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Personal Learning Earthquake

Learning Visions

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 Personal Learning Earthquake Sometimes tectonic plates shift and earthquakes form cracks in the crust. So the PLE conversation has been, for me, framed in terms of the LMS and tools. How do you make an LMS into a PLE? And it started dawning on me that the PLE was about a revolution in learning -- about teaching people to learn -- about empowering individuals to take control of their own learning environments, their futures. PLE is a concept. Tom Haskins wrote, "Life is my PLE." Tidal waves appear. This happened to me yesterday.

Blogging Inside or Outside the Corporate Firewall

Tony Karrer

It was interesting to read this because when I was writing about a PLE really also supporting my work - I didn't think of it in the context of ownership of the work product. Stephen's very much correct about a PLE being for the person. Stephen Downes commented on my recent post - Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and said - I am opposed to the trend coming from the corporate learning side of the house to treat PLEs as work tools. It is an interesting issue. There's a side benefit of doing this in that you can keep the content beyond your current job.

More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments

Tony Karrer

Enterprises that love PLE's Cross battles Downes: is corporate learning corrupt? There's some great discussion happening around the issues of control and resulting ownership of work product as we create personal work learning environments. if people will adopt these tools and approaches over time, then as a corporation, if you want to be able to keep the content after an employee leaves, especially blog content.

Horizontal Learning

Tony Karrer

Call them Personal Learning Environments (PLE) if you want but the key issue here is that they are based on user-centric design. Interesting post. Horizontal technologies for learning. In the eLearning sector many vendors have created eLearning solutions primarily for educational institutions. These technologies are supposedly designed for learning but that is not true. These technologies are institution-centric and vertical by nature. The concept of Learning Management System (LMS) was wrongly named. Does a Learner WANT an LMS? ). Surprise. No hands. Quite true. and eLearning 2.0

Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion

Tony Karrer

There's a great deal of discussion about whether or not a PLE should be a single tool or a collection of tools loosely joined. I'm not quite happy yet with PWLE (p-Whale) as a unifying term - but I prefer it to either PLE or PKM because both of those seem to be taken; somewhat limited in their scope and also seem to imply separation from day-to-day work I've run across a few different posts talking about Personal Work and Learning Environments which I have tentatively started to call PWLE - pronounced p-whale. For me, I add -- why bother? Just do it.

I see the opportunity for Learning Communities to facilitate some common toolsets where the community members have an easy-to-get-started-with PLE that easily integrates with others in the same learning community, while also are connected to others outside the community. Ray Sims has a great post on Personal Learning Environment and personal learning environments. very much aligns with my mental model. Ray tells us. What I am reaching for is an optimized environment for Learning AND a loosely-couple optimized environment for Doing. It gives context for what they were going to learn.

New Meme - Media I Consume - How about a change?

Tony Karrer

More Prior Work on PKM and PLE , now think Use Cases This made me realize that I would love it if this meme were actually how we have come to use the web to support personal / DIY learning. I got tagged by Luis Suarez around a new meme going around that focuses on "Media I Consume". I'm sure you all remember the Five Things Meme that struck the blogosphere a few months ago. My initial reaction was - "Not another one." Then I took a look at the information contained in his post and saw that Nancy White had done one as well. and then a few other general related news. Personal Learning Environments and personal learning environments

Tony Karrer

Note: Stephen and I don't agree on using the term Personal Learning Environment (PLE) with capitals to mean a put together system that integrates and supports your personal learning and a personal learning environment (lower case letters, no acronym) as the set of tools you use to help yourself learn (likely not very integrated). There's been quite a bit of discussion going on around Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and personal learning environments. We talked about this briefly during a session with Tony O'Driscoll , Brent Schelenker , and Steven Downes at the eLearningGuild.

Theories for the digital age: Self regulated learning

Learning with e's

A number of collaborative and social networking tools regularly play a role within the average student PLE. Hase and Kenyon’s (2007) conceptualisation of self determined learning - or heutagogy - places the emphasis on non-linear, self-directed forms of learning, and embraces both formal and informal education contexts. Boiling It Down to Valuable and Useful Knowledge

Vignettes Learning

Many pundits of Web 2.0, Social Networking, e-Learning, training and education are raising the issue about people's inability to process information overload. Some solutions may come from having better software and processes. I am skeptical about our over reliance on software to address this challenge. Is there a methodology or thinking process that can help people train themselves to think critically and manage massive information and get to the end results?

PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) Learning in the World of Technologies

Vignettes Learning

Ray Sims has compiled a good list of resources on Personal Learning Environments ( PLE ). There are many dimensions to PLE and this thought has yet a long way to evolve. A quick view of PLEs as a learning method is presented by Graham Attwell (view his slideshow ). It provides us another way to look at how we can learn best with the abundance of Web 2.0 technology and Social Networking. It has always been my belief that learners want to control their learning and this is even more pronounced as a behavior when they have technology to work with. I shall continue my search.

City of the dead

Learning with e's

The Personalised Learning Environment (PLE) will take their place. City of the dead. That was my impression of Pompeii. Back in AD 79 old Vesuvius blew its top and destroyed an entire area of the Roman empire, including Herculaneum and of course, the infamous Pompeii. It was witnessed by Pliny the elder, who was then admiral of the Roman fleet. Curiosity killed the Capt. Others didn't.

But reading The Bamboo Project blog reminded of how our digital lives are spread all over, and the idea of a PLE is quite compelling. If you are new to the whole idea of PLEs then you should check out a PLE in action. I know Stephen mentioned that a PLE doesn't actually exist yet, and I would only agree in that a single PLE tool does not exist yet. I was able to sit in on a session this year and I so listened to Stephen Downes talk about PLEs. Michele's post My Personal Learning Environment is GREAT!

However, the blogs often come back to the subject and this description , by Michelle at Bamboo Project is about the best description of how it works I've found. Does anyone out there know of an instance of RSS making it in to the L&D strategy for a large corporation?
