PWLE Not PLE - Knowledge Work Not Separate from Learning

But, too much structure is not going to work. I mentioned quite a while ago (in Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and Personal Work and Learning Environments ) that: Knowledge work is not separate from learning. Yes, there are times that Knowledge Workers will step away from day-to-day activities to go do developmental learning activities that may not be directly related to their day-to-day knowledge work. concepts and technologies (mashups, widgets, aggregation, OpenID, RSS, etc.) But that's the exception.

Several people have asked for some clarification on my definition of Concept Work and Concept Workers. To help clarify this and to begin thinking through implications for Work Literacy Skills , I went back through a couple of different sources. Thomas Davenport classifies Knowledge Work Types in Thinking for a Living: How to Get Better Performances And Results from Knowledge Workers using a variety of classifications. One was based on the complexity of the work. Work that requires greater interpretation/judgment vs. work that is relatively routine.

But, I actually think we should be focused on the emphasis on the type of knowledge work and the type of workers. Evaluator knowledge limit - In most cases, the person doing the performance evaluation knows less about the subject that the performer. To me this has heightened my sensitivity to the need for concept workers to reach out to people for knowledge work tasks in order to ensure they will receive a good evaluation. I'm very happy to announce that Michele Martin and I have just launched Work Literacy - a network of individuals, companies and organizations who are interested in learning, defining, mentoring, teaching and consulting on the frameworks, skills, methods and tools of modern knowledge work. When discussing new(ish) tools like blogs and social bookmarking, and discussing things like advanced search techniques, there's a gap in knowledge work skills. We need something to help us make sense of all that is happening that changes how we do our knowledge work.

New Work and New Work Skills

really was all about new work skills - skills we should be learning. Actually, it's also about the fact that there's not really new work as much as there is new work skills. Work Skills Changing Most of us who used to use these things know somewhat know that they really aren't in use anymore. In presentations, I often will cite this as an example of the kinds of changes in work skills that have occurred and are constantly occurring. A big part of education is learning how to do research and really that's where you learn the foundations of knowledge work.

One of the questions being raised this week in the free, online course Work Literacy: Web 2.0 To me, this is a critical part of The New Skills for knowledge workers. And what I often cite as the biggest change in knowledge work skills over the past 20 years is the change in access to people. Sure, the amount of existing content out there grows exponentially (a trillion web pages indexed by Google in 2008). This is definitely a knowledge work task where talking to someone will help. Yesterday I created a screen cast on LinkedIn for Finding Expertise. Today, I saw a post on our Free - Web 2.0 for Learning Professionals where someone said: I am currently trying to find a SME experienced with Moodle (a CMS/LMS) and WizIQ (synchronous web class technology). I posted a query about this to several of the groups that I've joined on LinkedIn and have received about a dozen responses so far. But how long do I have to wait to receive a response to my query? I need information faster than that.

I still argue that one of the best investments that can be made is reflection, particularly for knowledge work and any individual or organization that needs to not just survive but thrive in the growing flow of information and chaos. The other day, I wanted to read an article on the CLO site. I went there, but I found the article too hard to read; there were bloody animated gifs everywhere! Really, it’s only like 5 years since we realized that animated gifs make things hard to look at, and it’s based upon perceptual psychology way older than that.

Examples in matching were: People to Projects People to Jobs Students to Tutors In each of these, it has the classic characteristics that point to Performance Support: Infrequent Complex Important to get right I would claim that as knowledge work becomes more complex and we move towards being concept workers , we are being asked to act like experts even though we aren’t experts. We are already seeing this in terms of lots of startups aimed at particular elements of knowledge work. I definitely want to include Performance Support as part of the discussion.
