PWLE Not PLE - Knowledge Work Not Separate from Learning

I mentioned quite a while ago (in Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and Personal Work and Learning Environments ) that: Knowledge work is not separate from learning. That's the reason I call these: Personal Work and Learning Environment (PWLE - pronounce p-whale) And there's only one for me. Luckily all of the requirements that Mohamed cites apply equally well to a PWLE. Mohamed Amine Chatti (a fellow Eddie eLearning nominee) last two posts The LaaN Perspective , and Requirements of a PLE Framework are both interesting posts and worth reading.

It's always interesting to look back at the past year - 2008, think about what has changed for me during the year, and think about what that means for the next year - 2009. My blog is really the hub of my thinking and activity, so by going back through posts for the 2008, it gives me a pretty good perspective on what's been happening inside my head during 2008. during 2008.

But it was clear from the conversations that we've not quite made the shift to thinking about personal work and learning environments (PWLE) - see: PWLE Not PLE - Knowledge Work Not Separate from Learning , Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and Personal Work and Learning Environments. I've been having fabulous conversations about using SharePoint. SharePoint is so flexible and the documentation for it is so big and diverse, that a big part of my goals have been to understand the different ways that training organizations are using SharePoint.

Focus on Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and Personal Work and Learning Environments. John Seely Brown and Richard P. Adler's recent article - Minds on Fire: Open Education, the Long Tail, and Learning 2.0 talks about the implications of the Long Tail on Education. It's a pretty good introduction to the main concepts around a very important concept.

In fact, the lack of attention to this topic was the reason I founded Work Literacy in June of 2008. This sounds a lot like a personal learning environment, personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal work and learning environment (PWLE) and PIM. For example, Personal Learning , PLE , PWLE , PKM are all pretty closely related. I thought I'd kick off this year by posting a series of posts on topics related to tools and methods for work and learning. What should be in your tool set? What are the most important methods to adopt in addition to the tools? So, here goes.

Knowledge Work Skills / Work Literacy Having realized in 2007 that there's a very important Knowledge Worker Skill Gap , I felt the need in 2008 to find ways to help knowledge workers and organizations build skills like Leveraging Networks , Network Feedback , Finding Expertise , Using Social Media to Find Answers to Questions , Learning through Conversation and searching, scanning, etc. In June 2008, Work Literacy Launched. was considered a hot term in 2007 and 2008, but not in 2009. Using Topic Hubs to Speed My Learning In 2008, I launched eLearning Learning.

Year by Topic You can also go the other way to see things like selecting Twitter and you can see that the associated years are: 2009 2020 2008 2020? I've done a few posts in the past that take a look at the topics that are Hot Topics in Training. In each case, these are crude in that they look only at what terms people are using in a given content set. I have doubts about the validity of these data. Just a thought. eLearning Technology.

In his post, he really is looking primarily at the University of Manitoba's Connectivism Course that he designed and delivered with George Siemens to 2200 students in Fall 2008 and you can tell that he's busy thinking about the technology behind the Fall 2009 course. When I look at this from more the PWLE ( Personal WORK and learning environment ) perspective, I find that there are similar functions, but possibly a different mind set. There's a fantastic post by Stephen Downes - New Technology Supporting Informal Learning. It's definitely worth a read. eLearning Technology.

Today, Tom mentions that "James Ryan left an extensive comment on Enterprises that love PLEs. This got me thinking more about the words "personal" and "personalization". Why is that? eLearnin.
