At this time of year, many magazine writers, bloggers, and analysts do one or two things: they take a look back at the past year's ups and downs and/or they make predictions (bold or otherwise) about the year ahead. As a blogger—and more generally as a human conditioned my entire life with a January through December calendar year—I can't help but find myself thinking along these lines as well. Podcast host/interviewer. | ELEMENT K BLOG DECEMBER 2, 2009 The 2009 Edition of Top 100 Tools for Learning So it is high time that I give an update, and Jane has provided me the perfect excuse as she recently announced the final results of the 2009 edition of her survey of Tools for Learning. Here are the top 10 tools for 2009, with the number of votes each received. The growth of YouTube—not just in terms of the number of videos it serves up daily, but in how people perceive it—is evident by its climb from a modest 18th place in 2008 to 3rd in 2009. And another big climb is evident for SlideShare, which went from 31st in 2007 to 20th in 2008 to 7th in 2009. 159 Twitter. | | | | | | | ELEMENT K BLOG NOVEMBER 11, 2010 Learning and Development Roundup (vol. 18) Interestingly, the top tool from 2009 retained its crown: Twitter. Seven of the top ten from 2009 remained in the top ten for 2010, though rankings shifted up or down for each. It's time for another edition of the Learning and Development Roundup! See also previous editions at the archive page.) Jane Hart's Top Tools for Learning for 2010 Jane Hart's annual list, "Top 100 Tools for Learning," is now complete, and she has posted this year’s results online. 2010 Best in Breed List. Alphabetical List of All Tools from 2007 - 2010. Magazine. | ELEMENT K BLOG APRIL 5, 2010 Jane Hart's Social Learning Academy and the 2010 Tools Survey And back in early December I commented on the results of her 2009 survey—see my posting The 2009 Edition of the Top 100 Tools for Learning. I've been meaning to once again update readers on some of the latest work from industry expert and fountainhead Jane Hart. I'll start by noting that she has quietly kicked off her annual Learning Tools Survey, wherein she asks industry experts and practitioners to list their top ten tools for learning (broadly defined). I've participated in this survey since 2007, and have already updated my personal list in her index. | ELEMENT K BLOG JUNE 7, 2010 Reflections on ASTD ICE 2010 That is understandable especially when comparing with last year, since the Washington event in 2009 was a mere two months off the lows of the stock market, and while many would argue the economic fundamentals aren't particularly bright or strong right now, perceptions at least are more positive than they were a year ago. Total international attendance: 1,800. Attendee countries: 70+. | ELEMENT K BLOG JANUARY 13, 2010 Learning and Development Roundup (vol. 9) Well, the good news is that a few of these have made some video content available for free: Elliott Masie's Learning 2009 - Provided are videos of many of the "keynote" sessions. " Looking Back on 2009 The December "big question" from ASTD's Learning Circuits blog was "What Did You Learn About Learning in 2009?" And over at Tony Karrer's eLearning Learning site, his list "Hot Topics for 2009" and the many links to articles from throughout the year make for an interesting read. Great stuff! Google Wave. ELEMENT K BLOG | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2009 The Transition from Top Performer to Manager " In the July 2009 issue of Talent Management magazine, there was a very good article on this subject, "Nine Ways to Make Top Performers Effective Managers." A perpetual problem that organizations face is how to support their "top performers" when transitioning them into management roles. Such "all-stars" have many skills, character traits, and other positive characteristics that have made them standouts in what they do. But what made them so successful in their previous roles is not what is needed to be successful as managers. Defend the team. MORE >> -

ELEMENT K BLOG | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2009 On Twitter in the Enterprise In the October issue of T+D Magazine , enterprise strategist and social media expert Marcia Connor wrote a great article titled "Twitter: Inside the Enterprise, Up the Next Hill." " People in the corporate world, including those in L&D roles, are increasingly becoming familiar with Twitter as a useful tool. The next step is to understand how to use something "Twitter-like" inside the organization for increased communication, idea sharing, expertise location, and other benefits. It makes [our organization] smarter, more nimble, more personal." Web 2.0 MORE >> -
ELEMENT K BLOG | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2009 Everyone is Talking About Social Media Without a doubt, the topic of social media/Web 2.0 tools continues to be the hottest topic in our industry today. For starters, Jay Cross has long been pushing learning leaders to mature in their scope, and better focus on and enable informal learning in their organizations. His latest column for Chief Learning Officer magazine, "Informal Learning 2.0: Sustaining the Corporation in the Network Era," is as always a good read. And the same issue also includes "When the Bird Tweets, Does Anyone Learn?" Recent issues of T+D magazine have also focused on this critical area. MORE >> -
