Yet I did not – at least fully. There was something missing and it has been bothering me, but I never have let it stop me. That is how I work. Today, I get it – finally. My point? To tell stories. | ENGAGED LEARNING AUGUST 18, 2009 CMS vs. Web 2.0 vs. Social Media – Do You Know the Difference? On the SLQOTD on Twitter today, I am asking “What is the difference between a Web 1.0, CMS, Web 2.0 and Social Media.” Here is my take: Web 1.0 is a push from one ‘person’ to many people. To make a change or add, it often has to go through a process if internal to an organization or the person needs to know HTML (I am making some generalizations here, but go with me…) There is one person who owns the content and who is the authority. It is focused on the information or document and the user cannot customize what they want to see. Others can go get it. call it a 1:portal:1 model. Why would someone create a blog and write posts? Let’s look at two different areas: Outside to the world and inside within an organization. Outside to the world. have some information I feel is worth sharing. You are reading this blog and learning. Look at that. Purpose #1 complete. There are other purposes. | ENGAGED LEARNING AUGUST 18, 2009 CMS vs. Web 2.0 vs. Social Media – Do You Know the Difference? There is SO MUCH to talk about Twitter that it is hard to choose and condense into five posts. So, stay with me on this one… First: TWITTER. Imagine this scenario: You go to a Christmas party at a friend’s home. When you enter you see many groups of people standing in circles talking to each other. You are there for a few minutes, but are hungry. | ENGAGED LEARNING AUGUST 31, 2009 Five Rules for Community Unification Someday you might run up against this argument: “Why can we just quickly throw together an online community and let it go? In fact, we have a number of communities that we could do that with right now.”. There are so many behavior-based problems with this I can’t see straight. But imagine that the person was in I.T. Broad generalization…) They don’t care about the behavior of the community, they focus on the tools. Seriously? You want to take how much time to throw up communities when I can grab my web guy and he can have something up tomorrow?”. So, what do you say? Think about it. | | | | | | | | | -
ENGAGED LEARNING | MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2009 SharePoint vs. Social Media Recently I was asked if I was OK with using SharePoint instead of social media software. The short answer is a resounding NO. My main reason – which may not seem like much on the outset – is that SP is document focused and social media is people focused. After that explanation I can hear the question, “So what? If they do the same thing is there any difference? First of all, they don’t do the same thing. They may look like it, but they don’t. photo credit: withoutgas2. Some boys have road bikes. Making adjustments will help. They are slower. link]. MORE >> -

ENGAGED LEARNING | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2009 5 Requirements of Social Learning Adoption What follows is a short series of at least 5 posts. Each will focus on one aspect of what it takes to adopt social learning / media within an organization as well as with customers and prospects. The information is taken from the book Diffusion of Innovations by Everett M. Rogers and then applied to social learning. This is one of THE books, in my estimation, which will help the most when trying to help others adopt anything - technology, a new culture, processes, even hybrid corn in Iowa. A fabulous read. If you don’t have it, get it. 2) Compatibility. 3) Complexity. 4) Trialability. MORE >> -
ENGAGED LEARNING | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2009 Blogs – Day 1 – An Introduction Week 1: Blogs: Day 1. Blog is short for ‘Web Log. So many people have told me that they think blogs are only good for “verbal vomit. Yes, that can be true, but that is not how WE are going to use them. In fact, anyone who uses it correctly uses it for sharing and learning and conversation. This is written on my blog. Blogs are made by creating a series of ‘posts.’ ’ For the next few weeks I will write a post every day on this blog. In these posts I will explain how to use and why we would use these different social media and networking technologies. MORE >> -
ENGAGED LEARNING | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2009 Announcing: The Social Media & Networking Challenge On November 5th I am giving a presentation to NASA MSFC – a primer and introduction to using social media and networking. As we start a major push toward using social media here, we want to make sure everyone is speaking the same language and is somewhat familiar with what it is and why we might use it. At the end I will give a challenge for those who want to learn more and get some hands-on experience without diving into a deep, unknown world alone. The invitation is open to everyone. This challenge consists of 7 weeks of learning starting on Monday, November 9th. Week 2: RSS. MORE >>
