Clive Shepherd's recent post on " Elearning in all its forms " gives an overview of the three main facets of elearning and how they can each be used across the spectrum of informal to formal learning. | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS NOVEMBER 13, 2009 Moodle - the wrong tool for the job? Via Jane Hart. George Siemens is discussing whether the future of learning is in Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Social Networking Systems. In his post, George describes Moodle as being one of many "content-centric" systems. Martin Dougiamas (founder of Moodle) then comments: Moodle itself is actually activity-centric. Facilitators using Moodle start with an empty course container and use a handy collection of tools/apps/modules to build a collection or series of focussed collaborative activities for a group of people. Both have their place. But there are often very good reasons. | | | | | | | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS NOVEMBER 18, 2009 Getting started with social software for learning The world of social software is large, diverse and complex. There are a multitude of applications that sit within this space. Some of these are single purpose applications, such as Twitter, Wordpress, Google Docs, Google Reader etc. Some are multi-purpose, such as Facebook, Elgg and Moodle. This post is not about how to choose the right application. wrote about that earlier this year ( Top tips for choosing and using social software ), and Jane Hart's directory of software is probably the most useful starting place. You've recognised the value that the social element brings to learning. | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS MARCH 25, 2010 The state of corporate learning and development In the UK, in 2009, 70% of households had access to the internet. Whatever we might like to think, our corporations are not isolated from the surrounding society. In the developed world the brand names, web sites, and tools shown as examples here are playing a major part in how our society operates, consumes, communicates and learns. Key trends in society. Mobile phone use has grown hugely. | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS DECEMBER 21, 2008 Learning Conversations - SCORM warning Im speaking at Learning Technologies 2009 in January. When asked why they want this, and to what level of compliance, often the answer is a blank look. What is SCORM? | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS NOVEMBER 1, 2009 Rebuilding teacher professionalism Wikipedia currently (1st Nov 2009) describes some of the characteristics of a profession as: Having knowledge. In last week's post, I put together a manifesto for education that outlined ten things that I would do if put in charge of schools. I'm now going to start to unpack those a little. As always, I'm open for feedback and discussion - otherwise I'm just thinking in a little bubble of my own! Teaching has, historically, been seen as a profession - "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation" ( Merriam-Webster dictionary ). LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2009 Review: Testlink - an open source test management system Testing is one of those tasks, like writing documentation, that most of us tend to avoid until abolutely necessary. good test process, however, should help to ensure that you deliver exactly what the client ordered, and allow you to prioritise fixing problems in the your system. Depending on the size of your project, and the number of interlinked systems, you may have a number of different stages of testing activity, such as: Unit testing - looking at each component part of one system. Unit link testing - looking at whether the "units" fit into their host system OK. Testlink is such a product. MORE >> -
LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2009 Moodle and Elgg: a comparison I've just spent a good day in a workshop with Jane Hart (of elearning Pick of the Day fame), as the first stage in a programme looking at the whole breadth of social learning systems and approaches. Jane is a very effective advocate of Elgg , the open source social networking and social publishing platform. She calls it a social-learning platform, and uses it as the base from which a whole load of activities are started, and to introduce the concepts involved in social learning. As I came home, I was pondering whether I would use Elgg for this purpose, or whether I'd use Moodle. Moodle. MORE >> -
LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2009 Teaching online forces better pedagogy Michael Feldstein, in responding to a comment on his review of a Sakai book , made a statement that I wish I could agree with wholeheartedly: Teaching online is completely different. There is no stage. You have no captive audience. You have no ability to lean on your physical presence and stagecraft as a teacher. What you do have is the wide world that the student is immersed in, and the student’s imagination and initiative. So that’s what you use. There's nothing that can force a teacher, tutor or materials designer to try better pedagogical practices. MORE >> -
LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | SUNDAY, JANUARY 10, 2010 Definition of a learning ecosystem But it's not a term that I'd really come across until late 2009. The term "learning ecosystem" seems to be popping up every couple of weeks at the moment. Now that may be because I'm leading a session on it at the Learning Technologies conference. So I'm just noticing it more. Before "learning ecosytem" becomes another buzzword like "blended learning", ie. meaning everything and anything we do in adult and corporate learning, perhaps we need to be quite clear in defining it. link]. www.ndma.gov.pk/Publications/Terminology_Disaster%20Risk%20Reduction.doc. LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2009 Training can not lead to learning without feedback A while back , I wrote about the importance of dialogue and feedback to ensure effective change. Far too often I come across people asking for "learning modules" which are intended to change behaviours or develop skills or knowledge, yet many times are purely about providing information, hints, tips, guidance etc. So what is it that makes an information module into a learning module? The secret ingredient is feedback. For simple changes that feedback could be given programmatically. through the learning module itself. For financial reasons this is usually minimised as much as possible. MORE >>
