Tool Set 2009

Tony Karrer

I thought I'd kick off this year by posting a series of posts on topics related to tools and methods for work and learning. I'm hoping to address questions such as: How do you create a personal tool set or Personal Learning Environment (PLE) for yourself? What should be in your tool set? What are the most important methods to adopt in addition to the tools? Should twitter be part of your tool set? But hopefully 2009 will be the year when that begins to change. Tools to Make Reading & Research More Effective. What is a Tool Set?

Instructivism, constructivism or connectivism?

E-Learning Provocateur

No longer a novice, the learner has the tools to drive further learning in the context of their existing knowledge. Instructivism is dead. Gone are the days of an authoritarian teacher transmitting pre-defined information to passive students. In the 1990s, constructivism heralded a new dawn in instructional design, turbo-charged by the rise of Web 2.0. Students morphed into participants , empowered to seek new knowledge and understanding for themselves, in the context of their own unique, individual experiences. Fast forward to today and connectivism is all the rage. Slippery slope.

Again, not every tool below is SaaS based, but at some point, you have to move to the SaaS world, especially if you are offering or saying you do – some type of mobile learning functionality. Ease of Use – definitely plays into the decision making. I’ve seen some authoring tools that fit most of the criteria above, but whose ease of use is substandard or even really bad. Tips and Tools for Synchronous e-Learning

Higher education folks have put some thought into how adult learning theory relates to synchronous learning tools and techniques. This article concluded that in “order to create learners’ satisfaction and enhance their performance…(it needs) to be attuned to adult learners needs&# , and listed the following as traits of adult learners that should be considered when selecting synchronous learning tools. The next trick is to identify ways to leverage synchronous tools to hit these key adult learning practices. SYNCHRONOUS LEARNING TOOLS. INTERACTION.

Top Ten Tools for Learning 2011

Experiencing eLearning

This is the fifth year that Jane Hart has been collecting lists of top tools for learning. have contributed my lists in 2007 , 2008 , and 2009. You can contribute your top tools too. As in 2009, I’m going to divide my list into personal learning and course development. Google Reader is still my main tool for personal learning. just checked my stats, and I currently have 320 subscriptions and have read over 8000 items in the last 30 days, and over 300,000 items since February 2009. Jing is the best free tool for screenshots I’ve ever used.

However, that should change over time as their confidence and experience grows with using these tools. I’m sure you’re better with Word now than when you first started? However, advances in mobile technology and connectivity, coupled with the business world’s shift towards cloud computing , will eventually render the cell phone an indispensable learning and working tool.

Elements of a Virtual World/Metaverse

Kapp Notes

The first software element that makes up a virtual world is a synchronous learning tool similar to WebEx or Adobe Connect or Saba’s Centra. Synchronous learning tools allow for real-time interaction on a computer among learners separated by great distances. Using a virtual world or metaverse for training is not as science-fiction as it sounds. This is similar to the Web 2.0

Kapp Notes

Some take aways included: Provide new learners with an experience in the virtual world in which they must to perform a task to learn about navigation and virtual world tools without giving them a list like " Ok, now press F2 to walk, then press F3 to go backward." It makes it more fun and more engaging. Why invest in 3D learning spaces? It is learning by doing.

Video-Based eLearning Authoring Tools

Tony Karrer

May outsource some of the production work, but the tool must be an off-the-shelf, known authoring tool - no proprietary tools (see eLearning Course Development for rationale on that) Their only experience is with Camtasia. and Rapid Authoring Tools? Rapid eLearning Tools Browse eLearning Content at www.elearninglearning.comI've been asked several times a similar question so I thought I would throw it out to see what readers here will recommend for doing basic video-based elearning authoring. Audio in E-Learning

Kapp Notes

Audio is a powerful and impactful tool, but it is often used incorrectly within e-learning courses. recently had a discussion with Dan Bliton in his role at the Metro DC ASTD chapter about this topic, here is a small part of the interview. common question is "Should we have audio in the e-learning module that exactly matches the text on the screen?" The general answer is no. It’s not that you can’t learn from audio and text, it is just that the learning is more productive if the two are separate (audio that enhances what is on the screen not repeats it word-for-word).

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution. believe though, that will be higher, especially with these tools meeting and honestly beating some major league competitors. While there are SaaS tools that do not yet offer this feature, it will change.  Built in assessment tool, inc. Trend 1.

Moodle: A fantastic tool for informal learning - and not just “e-learning”

Bottom-Line Performance

Last week I hosted a webinar called “Come Moodle with Us: Straight Talk on Moodle as an LMS Solution.&# Along with two of my colleagues at BLP, we showed attendees OUR Moodle site - and attempted to illustrate many of the cool features Moodle provides and how Moodle facilitates informal learning and not just functions as a place to house and track e-learning. Those who want to use it just to track learning are missing its point. In our case, it connects all the employees in our organization to each other. Example: I created a “course&# in Moodle called Adobe Max.

Screen capture from Scratch an MIT project that involves a simple to great game design software.
