Consequently, we now see social media monitoring companies merging with text analytics companies to bundle their service offerings to fine tune their ability to monitor a customer's activity and online influence, tracking that information to the workflows of marketing, sales, customer support, or operations in near real time. Last week, I announced an upcoming conference in Banff on Learning Analytics ( call for papers can be found here). We have also set up a Google Group for discussions about learning analytics and the conference. What are Learning Analytics? I’m interested in how learning analytics can restructure the process of teaching, learning, and administration. | SANA EASY BLOGGERS APRIL 27, 2010 Is Google Analytics the new LMS?! You can gain access to extensive usage statistics using Google Analytics ([link] Just sign up once, obtain a Tracker ID and add a small snippet of code to the HTML sources of your e-Learning content. Using the web interface of Google Analytics you will see where your visitors come from, what browser they are using, how much time they spent on each part of the course, and how they use your content. Do you want to gain access to a powerful reporting engine? Do you not want to pay for expensive software licenses? Do you not want to hire an administrator? Let me Google that for you! | SANA EASY BLOGGERS MAY 10, 2010 Is Google Analytics the next LMS? (continued) Last week we shared our visions on using Google services (such as Analytics) as an alternative to expensive LMS software. Of course, Google Analytics was never intended as a full-flex LMS, we merely make use of the reporting and statistic features of it. Judging from the many responses, re-blogs and re-tweets we received, this topic struck a vibe in the e-Learning community. Some readers (amongst which George Aston) wonder how you can determine which users have actually passed the courses. Nevertheless, we have some ideas on that. will take Sana EasyGenerator as an example. | ADVENTURES IN CORPORATE EDUCATION MARCH 27, 2010 Lets get real about analysis – starting with the last LS2010 Keynote This sort of talk annoys me because I’m very analytical. GEORGE SIEMENS | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2010 Connections, Clouds, Things & Analytics I had the privilege of presenting to the Caledonian Academy yesterday at Glasgow Caledonian University on Connections, Clouds, Things & Analytics. Slides are below, the recording is available here. It was wonderful to connect (again) with Allison Littlejohn, Anoush Margaryan, Colin Milligan, and others. Their institute has the buzz, energy, and feel that are often not evident in university research learning/technology institutes. On a side note, many universities have an educational technology department that is focused on PD. Perhaps it’s time to revisit that idea. Glasgow. MORE >> -
GEORGE SIEMENS | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 Light-weight learning analytics tools I’ve heard of SNAPP before – software tool that allows users to visualize the network of interactions resulting from discussion forum posts and replies – but decided to play around with it today. This is a good example of a fairly simple, light-weight tool to analyze social interactions in an LMS like Moodle, Blackboard, or Desire2Learn. The process is simple: install a simple bookmarklet in your browser, go to your LMS, select the discussion forum that you want to analyze, and then activate the SNAPP plugin. Greater analysis of the nature of interaction (i.e MORE >> -

GEORGE SIEMENS | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 Learning Analytics Have I mentioned we’re hosting a conference in beautiful Banff on Learning Analytics in February 2011? We’re trying to bring together the technical and the social/pedagogical aspects of learning analytics. The call for papers has been posted. Facebook/linkedin/TEL Europe group info supporting the conference can be found here. All technical makes Jack boring. All social makes Jack frustrated because he is unable to take advantage of technology affordances. MORE >> -
