I’ve received some good feedback on my post Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) for Managing Course Assets. One thing is pretty clear, LCMS tools have really headed towards a kind of super Authoring tool and there's a related but quite distinct need for support for a Warehouse. In terms of use of traditional LCMS products towards the needs cited in the previous post, Brenda Robinson and I had a good "discussion" around this - email exchange. My larger customers faced the same problem and use LCMS to fix it. Another problem solved by LCMS technology.

I say this because its real strength IMO is in the education sector, and you see it,  in its overall presentation.  The biggest challenge you will face with Moodle, and in many cases with open source LMS/LCMS solutions is that you need to have strong technical skills. Moodle and some other open source LMS/LCMS solutions are not really “out of the box” solutions. CMS: An Alternative to a LMS for those who seek Portals or Communities

While the race is on for people to get LMSs and LCMSs, there are some people who either do not want or need a LMS/LCMS, but want to create a learning community or more often, some type of  portal – intranet or internet. While you can create an amazing learning portal with social learning and a LMS as a hub, with APIs, you may not want all the doo-dads that come with a LMS system, nor do you want to buy a LCMS, when you might only be seeking specific features that can exist without the “LMS&# component. Interoperability – The Double Premise for a LMS/LCMS. and the LMS/LCMS is SCORM 1.2 Anyone in this industry knows that interoperability sounds fantastic, but you will face challenges, regardless of your LMS/LCMS vendor – small, medium or large. If you are moving your courses (excluding your rapid e-learning software courses, such as those built in Articulate or Captivate or whatever – and your new LCMS/LMS vendor accepts them)  from your current LMS/LCMS vendor into your new LMS/LCMS vendor, 99% of the time you will face interoperability issues.

SAAS LMSs and Vendor Client Lists Questions

So in the case of a LMS/LCMS, it is hosted on your vendor’s servers and can be accessed anywhere there is an internet connection and a browser (that they support), anywhere in the world. Argument for security internally due to data or otherwise is out-dated:  Even before cloud computing, hosted LMS/LCMSs always had very tight security safeguards in place; in some cases stronger than some companies; I am unaware of one LMS/LCMS that has been hacked. What is SAAS and why is hosted better than having it on your own servers.  Plus, what does being in the cloud actually mean?
