Gearing Up for a Laptop-Free TechKnowledge 2012

So I’ve decided to go to TechKnowledge almost laptop-free. (As It’s not on the app stores yet, but there will be a conference app and you’ll definitely want it to help you plan your conference experience. While I like my laptop, I’ve gotten very tired of lugging it around conferences, and my mobile devices get better battery life and pick up WiFi signal better than my laptop anyway.

I recently attended the American Society for Training and Development’s 2012 TechKnowledge conference , where over 1,200 attendees and 70 exhibitors got together in Las Vegas to talk about training, do some networking, and discuss the future of learning and technology. Big Data is a term that you may not of heard of before but will hear a great deal of in the near future.

Because I knew the business and had helped design our software package, and because I was pretty good in front of a crowd, I ended up doing the training. ASTD’s TechKnowledge (coming up January 30-February 1, 2013 in San Jose) is a great place to learn more about elearning and connect with other learning geeks. What helps you create and sustain passion for this work? Once upon a time, I worked at a small company. My new job title: “instructional designer.” 16 years later I’m still at it, designing elearning programs for the (mostly) corporate market. What about you?

Aaron Silvers and Kris Rockwell, helping Jane McGonigal demonstrate massively multiplayer thumb wrestling. Jeanette Brooks from Articulate and Diane Elkins were a huge help working the room and troubleshooting as we covered as much ground as we could in these 75-minute, hands-on sessions. Their analytics help them tell a story. What a great time I had at TK12!

This helped us focus on tangible results. The author does a good job of helping walk through the process of building objectives framed around understanding. But asking these questions is a good start and hopefully they help transition your course development away from information dumps to meaningful and effective learning. 2012….coming At least not immediately.

I first met Karl Kapp in late 2012. Consequently, I was pretty thrilled when he visited the Knowledge Guru booth at DevLearn 2012 to learn about our newly-launched game engine. The section on scoring will be hugely helpful to any new learning game designer. This section is going to be very helpful to the novice designer. I contributed my chapter about a year ago.
