High Impact Blended Learning on a Tight Budget: How We Did It

Bottom-Line Performance

Fewer resources exist to support the orientation and training needs of the new team members inside a company. There is an HR manager, but training and development is a tiny part of her significant responsibilities. Finally, we created a training schedule that covered the first 12 months. Getting new employees ramped up quickly is the challenge and goal of every company.

What Can You Expect in 2013?

CLO Magazine

Several trends will drive performance and development in 2013, and learning leaders will need to strategize for mobility. The video trend will continue in 2013 as video is embedded into Web courses, attached to learning databases and appears on self-generated YouTube sites, Skype and video-enabled webcasting. Alternatives are virtual learning labs for virtual hands-on software training, 3-D virtual worlds for distance role plays and live or online simulations to model the real world. With mobility, learning and work are not conducted in isolation. It is also popular.

Will learning in SharePoint benefit from the Experience API?

SharePoint and Assessment

Although many corporations and colleges, universities and schools use SharePoint for training and education, take-off for SharePoint in learning is still patchy. SharePoint 2013 looks like it will have some education capabilities, but Microsoft are keeping very quiet about them; for some analysis of the client object model in April here or see a November blog from Mike Smith here ). But I wonder if a new e-learning standard called the Experience API might have more impact in getting SharePoint used for learning, particularly in corporate training?

This FREE Alternative to Might Surprise You

Part 1: Driving Social Learning

CLO Magazine

The iPads were pre-populated with content, including an e-book that contained the company’s training materials and multimedia content, such as video clips, where appropriate. No matter how they define it, learning executives seem to agree that jumping on the social learning bandwagon just because everyone else is doing it is counterintuitive. No matter how they define it, learning executives seem to agree that jumping on the social learning bandwagon just because everyone else is doing it is counterintuitive; it needs to serve a purpose. And then, where can we use this tool?

How to Lead in a Virtual World

CLO Magazine

The way organizations train and develop employees must keep pace with the increasing number of them working away from the office. Outline the project’s objective and the desired goals and keep them on an intranet or SharePoint site. Use agendas, checklists, regular touchpoints, staff meetings, timelines, project flow charts and scorecards, and post these on a SharePoint site to make sure the structure stays in place. There’s no doubt technology has changed the way business is accomplished. Here a few of the findings it has discovered in its research. Pamela L.

Prepare for the New Ecosystem

CLO Magazine

Technologies such as SharePoint, LMSes and other content repositories abound. Bob Mosher is global chief learning and strategy evangelist for Ontuitive and has been an influential leader in the IT training space for more than 25 years. It’s time to rethink how information is aggregated and used. Take a different look at how you use the ever-shrinking time you have with learners in the classroom. have attended three learning events in the last month. Informal Learning’s Many Shades of Gray

CLO Magazine

Gery defined electronic performance support as: An orchestrated set of technology-enabled services that provide on-demand access to integrated information, guidance, advice, assistance, training and tools to enable high-level job performance with a minimum of support from other people. Like adopting any other new training approach, learning organizations have evolved their understanding of how to effectively apply it. This is where powerful tools such as learning management systems and Microsoft SharePoint have been misused and misrepresented.

Seven Summer SharePoint Stories

SharePoint and Assessment

Here is my take on seven stories on SharePoint published over the summer. 1. found’s piece Office 365 Earns High Marks in Education, Struggles in Enterprise insightful, not so much for its mention of education as to the suggestion that it will actually be Office/SharePoint 2013 that will make organizations move to Office 365 – if you’ve got to upgrade, may as well upgrade into the Cloud. 2. Speaking of SharePoint 2013, of course this has gone to beta over the summer. What of new education features in SharePoint 2013? for speculation.

Status Report on the Learning Ecosystem

In the Middle of the Curve

For us, this means leveraging Active Directory and likely SharePoint. If we go the SharePoint route- I am hoping we can leverage existing materials vs having to create “special” exercises for classes. Big fan of “practice AND get work done” if I have to do training events. I’m in the throes of a major learning ecosystem redevelopment project. Much of my radio silence has been the result of time spent “collecting bricks” – the materials I need for rebuilding this thing. It’s still early days. We have essentially divided the ecosystem into three parts Portal and access.

#skillsoft Perspectives 2013 - Higher Ed Track

In the Middle of the Curve

Since we are in the process of re-thinking our "intranet" and portals (otherwise known as "the SharePoint implementation") - we will have to rethink how people access our content libraries. Especially for on-demand topics we no longer do instructor-led training on (such as Office and Google Apps). This year I decided to hang out in the higher ed track. See what other institutions using SkillPort are doing. - 2 of the 3 higher ed presentations I saw used either another LMS or a portal to access and curate SkillPort content. People got too overwhelmed.

Where do you put a learning environment?

Learning Journal

It seems an odd question, doesn’t it? I’ve been considering the question sincemy presentation on curating a learning environment at last week’s Training 2013 conference (see  Learning Environments by Design ). There are a number of tools that promise that capability, including SharePoint, Ning, Yammer, and more. Where, exactly, does a learning environment go? The people who attended my session asked a couple of great questions along these lines, and I have wanted to have a better answer for it. How do you provide access to these resources and activities?

2013 Innovation — Division 2

CLO Magazine

The learning function, led by Adri Maisonet-Morales, is tackling that training challenge by moving past the company’s historic reliance on classroom-based instruction. The organization has gone from traditional paper-based materials for live classes to distributing electronic versions via SharePoint. Blue Cross & Blue Shield also has adopted a training outsourcing strategy expected to generate savings of nearly half a million dollars over two years. BLOOM, a new video-based learning system, stands for Blue Learning Opportunities On-demand Media.

Playing with Subscription-Based Learning

In the Middle of the Curve

Finally, we ran into too many instances where we would do the quarterly training, then 1 month later have a telecommuter ask for specific training on how to use the same tool we trained them on 1 month prior. That almost definitely rules out the SharePoint search functionality. Compliance training! Jumping Too Quickly

In the Middle of the Curve

We would be able to focus on what inputs would need to be collected - because there is no WAY one LMS is going to capture everything in our environment. I am also not convinced that whatever LMS we wind up with should serve as a "training portal". came to this conclusion through hard experience :( We could work on something that would scale to different inputs (such as SharePoint, Drupal pages, the Student LMS, external content systems, new enterprise products). The Manager, the Director and I sat around a small table staring at feedback for our (not so) little LMS project.

eLearning Topics

Tony Karrer

I've done a few posts in the past that take a look at the topics that are Hot Topics in Training. When you look at the keywords on the left you see things like: Social Learning (356) Social Media (411) Twitter (725) Google Wave (22) Camtasia (76) Adobe Captivate (71) Social Network (460) Now, the content set in this case are highly skewed towards innovators as compared to the topic sets being used by my past analysis (training conferences). 2006 2010 2007 Does the associated years for SharePoint suggest it's a technology for the future? Just a thought. eLearning Technology.
