Like many of you, I was surprised to find out that Skillsoft is in the process of acquiring SumTotal. Combination of Skillsoft and SumTotal offers comprehensive, content-rich HR solutions. Who provides learning or training (some people see a difference between) to customers? Getting back to Skillsoft and SumTotal.

This is a story about a one-time giant in the 3rd party off-the-shelf content providers. A vendor who made not only poor business decisions with the likes of Percipio, but also with the monumental blunder of acquiring SumTotal. . On the other hand, it had IBM Talent Watson in its system, before SumTotal did. That’s it.

Don”t fall for the trap that someone has been doing e-learning since 93 or less, because what they are actually stipulating is that they provided CBT and whatever at that point. . But SumTotal and alike do it as well. Great for the 70’s, in 2014 not so much. Jargon has become universal in 2014.

User interface and user experience - This to me is extremely important – if people can’t figure it out and it does not provide a user friendly experience, then it doesn’t matter about the feature sets. Modern UI – front and back - Ties a bit to the top criteria point, but this is 2014, not 1999. MyBigCampus.

The first to use SumTotal. Course upload content - Any system in the market should enable you to upload courses via a 3rd party authoring tool, via a 3rd party course provider, PowerPoint, PDFs/Docs., 2014 learning management system LMS LMS RFP selecting a LMS' The point is, someone has to be the first one out there to try it.
