Virtual Summit 2020: What we learned

In November 2020 together with SafetyCulture, we hosted a virtual summit: From Surviving To Thriving.

To help inspire and thrive in our post-pandemic world, a group of speakers that are experts in the face of adversity shared their insights. As we all adapt to unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID-19, we have all learned that adaptation and resilience are key.

Here’s a sneak peek at what we learned.

Captain Scott Kelly, NASA astronaut

Scott Kelly is a history-making NASA astronaut, being the first to complete a Year-in-Space Mission from 2015 to 2016. Scott didn’t perform well in the educational system but credited his determination and hard work to achieve his goals. NASA astronaut recognizes the possibilities of human potential and believes that anyone can learn and train to achieve something amazing.

One thing I learned is, how good we are at anything has nothing to do with how good we are when we start it. With a lot of hard work, attention to detail, trying to learn everything you possibly can about what you’re trying to do and just never giving up on yourself.

Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, pilot of the Miracle on the Hudson

Captain “Sully” Sullenberger is the pilot who successfully carried out an emergency passenger plane landing on the Hudson River, which inspired millions and even resulted in the production of a Hollywood movie. Capt. Sully credits his training and preparation, which gave him the tools to approach an emergency situation calmly and successfully. Beyond the emergency flight landing, Capt. Sully stresses the importance of continuous learning and striving for excellence.

Nigel Gan, the United Nations

Nigel Gan, Training Specialist and Portfolio at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, discusses the scale that UNITAR have reached with the help of EdApp. The Educate All initiative has enabled millions around the globe to access invaluable training material completely for free, despite the global pandemic.
