Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

need a LMS. Q: I’m looking for a LMS that has classroom mgt, can have abc learners see only one course or a set of courses, while another group sees a different set of courses and I need to batch upload my learners. A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. The ones who may not are those who identify themselves as “Training mgt systems and alike” – because they are really focused on the course authoring tool and are not a LMS in the true sense of the word. Task management. Learning 24/7.

The LCMS at a Crossroads

Learning on the Leading Edge

We will soon publish our brand new research study of the learning management systems market: Learning Management Systems 2010 (available soon). Today, however, I want to talk about another project we are doing in parallel to our LMS research: a report on the ongoing relevance of the LCMS (learning content management system). The topic of Learning Content Management Systems has been a lighting rod for both providers and customers. So do these other options doom the LCMS to obsolescence?

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

eLearning 24-7

trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success. I am seeing many vendors whose products were built for SMB (and more aligned on the lower side of mid size companies) who are now pushing into the mid/upper mid to large size customer band.   The problem here is that they developed a solution that is not made for 10,000 or more end users. In 2009 and 2010, many vendors in the LMS market, tossed in items that at one time were extra fees. Mobile Learning and Tablets. Learning 24/7.

5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

eLearning 24-7

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. LMSs/LCMS/CMS/learning platforms in commercial and open space continued their presence. For the mobile learning space – it is a necessity. If you are still a huge fan of ILT or believe a blended learning approach is necessary, why stick only to PowerPoint, handouts and long talks? Talent Management. Boring.

Two situations recently have got me thinking about e-learning authoring tools. With the script now 1/3 complete and with a session agreed at the eLearning Guild's DevLearn 2007 in San Jose in November, my mind is turning to how I can convert this script into a half-decent piece of e-learning to show all those folks who come along to take a look. Secondly, I've been doing some work for a client of mine that has an LMS with some authoring capabilities, trying to compare what they have to offer with what's available elsewhere. Everybody's got an authoring tool. Have you ?
