Four Emerging Technologies that L&D Leaders Need to Consider

Bottom-Line Performance

It’s been “emerging” since 2008… and still only a handful of organizations are using it in a meaningful way. Consequently, I think it makes sense for learning leaders to be asking themselves how they can integrate video, interactivity, and mobile together to produce just-in-time solutions and practice activities. Mobile in Cars… Really. BIG DATA.

Activities for Integrating Learning

Clark Quinn

It draws heavily on the notion of activity -based learning. The learning process is broken up into a series of activities. Each activity starts with giving the learning teams a deliverable they have to create, with a deadline an appropriate distance out. There may be people available for questions, and they’re also being actively watched and coached (less as they go on).

Reconciling Activity and Decisions

Clark Quinn

On the one hand I talk about using decisions as a basis for design, and on the other I refer to activity -based learning. What was necessary was reconciling activity and decisions. In fact, this emerged from game designer Sid Maier’s quote about how games are a series of interesting decisions. That’s my reconciliation of activity and decisions.

Emergent Workplaces: Learning In The Networked World

A recent, very brief conversation with @krishashok triggered a few thoughts related to emergent workplaces and what learning in the networked world will look like. And after mulling over some of these, I thought they were worth putting down on virtual paper.

Emergence of the Performance Catalyst

Tom Spiglanin

New tools emerged, social platforms exploded onto the scene, and mobile technologies changed where, when, and how workplace learning occurs. They understand that learning is an inherently social activity and enthusiastically explore ways to leverage workplace technology to span time, place, and distance to stimulate social learning. Of course that was only the beginning.

Emerging new roles for learning and performance professionals

Jane Hart

And as more and more organisations do this, it means we are seeing the emergence of some new “learning and performance professional” roles in the workplace. What other new roles do you think will emerge? Over the last week or so I have been posting about how (I think) the workplace learning landscape is changing. I’ve highlighted some of them on my diagram below.

Drill and Practice Activities for Your eLearning Courses

If there is one single factor that can be blamed in this otherwise blemish-free eLearning course, it is the reinforcement activities. What are Reinforcement Activities? Reinforcement activities are practice activities that give learners the chance to apply the information, knowledge, and skills they have learned from the course. Drill and Practice Activity Types.

Types and proportions of learning activities?

Clark Quinn

There are some things that need to be known cold, e.g. emergency procedures, hence the tremendous emphasis on drills in aviation and the military. I’ve been on quite the roll of late, calling out some bad practices and calling for learning science. And it occurs to me that there could be some pushback. So let me be clear, I strongly suggest that the types of learning that are needed are not info dump and knowledge test, by and large. What does that mean? Let’s break it down. There are times when fact remembering is needed, such as medical vocabulary (my go-to example).

A problem arises, however, when active participation is expected.
