If people have prior knowledge in domain, they can create own visual by activating their prior knowledge. The animation can give too much visual information and it’s often out of the control of the learner. The law students didn’t show great improvement with video. Invest more in visuals in beginning level courses.

Courses are divided into weekly modules, and students mostly complete the activities at the same time (although they have control over when in the week they do work). We started adding self-paced activities as part of courses last year. The courses themselves are primarily asynchronous, with the occasional synchronous chat.
