Like many of you, I was surprised to find out that Skillsoft is in the process of acquiring SumTotal. Combination of Skillsoft and SumTotal offers comprehensive, content-rich HR solutions. Ask yourself, how many HR people do you know that are aware of ADDIE? Getting back to Skillsoft and SumTotal. They are not.

You can buy a big system that does all (like Blackboard, Sumtotal, Saba, Cornerstone on demand, et cetera) or you can go for a bunch of specialized tools that will beat that big solution on every specialty. In developing e-Learning a lot of e-Learning experts are using a methodology that is called ADDIE. Don’t be to formal.

Everyone I knew, followed the ADDIE approach. SumTotal – Today? Owned by SumTotal – who ruined it, because by then it was GeoLearning Maestro (not that great). Owned by SumTotal – who ruined it, because by then it was GeoLearning Maestro (not that great). SumTotal called it SumTotal Maestro.

But SumTotal and alike do it as well. ADDIE - Should be punted into outer space. For some reason a lot of vendors, erroreously assume that modules is widely used – it isn’t. The most well known vendor to use modules are Cornerstone OnDemand. And sadly, some lower price vendors are using it as well.
