Also, an ADL study indicated that a simulation/game did not have to be entertaining to be instructional so maybe “fun is not an element but if we look at motivating learners to participate than fun is an element…so more pondering is needed. I had no idea what I was doing just walking around uncharted territory and I hated it.

Then we discussed knowledge transfer and references a paper by ADL titled Transfer of Training from Simulations in Civilian and Military Workforces: Perspectives from the Current Body of Literature. We discussed Malone’s Theory of Intrinsic Motivation.

The National Science Foundation has funded research on dozens of educational games with research as a condition of funding, the US Department of Education has and continues to fund researching in to gaming, the ADL has recently published two meta-analysis studies on games and research, the US military has done studies on the effectiveness of simulations, (..)

Dr. Traci Stizmann’s, who worked for ADL and is at the University of Colorado Denver and mentioned above conducted a meta-analysis with a review of 65 studies with over 6,000 participants. But, ok, let’s now look at a peer-reviewed study that appears to be adequately designed and was published in a peer review article.
