I've been using Adobe Captivate for a while now and I am very happy with it for technical training projects but I can't help but wonder if other tools like Articulate may be a great addition to my toolbox. I'm hoping you can help me make this decision by commenting with your thoughts on the skill sets of Articulate, Captivate, or a different eLearning authoring tool altogether.

I have been looking into various tools. To present a moving demo I need to integrate another product called Viewlet cam. I am working on developing eLearning technical training courses for an ERP software application being implemented within a division of the company I work for using Adobe Captivate 3. If you are familiar with Adobe Captivate then you are familiar with "Assesment Simulations." Captivate and the assessment simulations are a life saver for me because I can train them on the software without them actually having access to it. I love assessment simulations because they require the learner to do the clicking rather than just viewing a screen recording of the process.
I didn’t get to attend the Adobe Summit or DevLearn 2008 this week in San Jose, CA, and I’m totally jealous of everyone who got a sneak peek of Adobe Captivate 4.   Captivate 4 will be part of the new Adobe eLearning Suite .  For anyone who is not familiar with Adobe Captivate , it is an eLearning development tool that “enables Thankfully, Philip Hutchison posted an excellent overview of all the new features on his pipwerks blog .  You must check out Philip’s review.
In this post I was going to focus on other types of content creation tools that can be used for building courseware, assessments, interactive content and games. However, there is no point in re-inventing the wheel, and recently some great blog posts have been written about content creation or eLearning authoring tools. The diagram maps out the most popular authoring tools on the market and then the pros/cons I wrote a post back in July about the most popular screenrecorders on the market, which are very useful for turning dull PowerPoint Presentations in to a more exciting visual/audio experience and for creating cool demo videos.

Update June 2008 - added one free flash quiz tool based on a question I received. This tool is listed at the bottom. I suggested a couple of tools, but then wondered if I had given them the best list of tools. Here's guild member satisfaction ratings for tools in the test / quiz category.
