Adobe Captivate: Preloaders

I Came, I Saw, I Learned

by Kevin Siegel        I received an email last week from a Captivate developer who was concerned with how long it was taking for a published lesson to begin playing for his learners. In fact, lessons created by other Captivate developers in his company downloaded faster than his.   Of course, if one Captivate developer can overlook the role of the Preloader, it's possible others have as well.   Captivate ships with a few Preloaders you can use when you publish your lesson.   What's a Preloader? I Came, I Saw, I Learned

by Kevin Siegel    Several years ago I was in Canada teaching Captivate for a large Toronto-based company. We were just getting ready to cover the accessible features found in Captivate when I was informed that I could skip the section because Canadians were not required to create accessible content. Articulate Storyline vs. Adobe Captivate

I Came, I Saw, I Learned

A recent LinkedIn post asked eLearning developers: which tool is best: Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline? As  As I read through the comments, I was struck by how many people insisted that Storyline was the better choice because it was easier to learn than Captivate because it was so much like Microsoft PowerPoint.   As someone who uses both Captivate and Storyline, I have to disagree with that recurring sentiment. both Captivate and Storyline seem simple at first glance.   Captivate costs around $1,000.   My answer?

Fortunately, adding interactivity to a lesson does not negatively impact the size of the published SWF. Rather, imported assets such as audio, video and images are the main culprits behind SWF bloat. by Kevin Siegel.

If you hadn't noticed the option in the lower right of the Captivate 6 Publish dialog box, join the crowd.    The  Scalable HTML content  option is off by default, leading me to believe is wasn't necessarily a good idea to use it. I was curious what the option would do, so I enabled it and published a SWF. Yes, Scalable HTML content works if you publish as a SWF or HTML5.

I Came, I Saw, I Learned

by Kevin Siegel    I received an email from a Captivate developer asking if it was possible to remove the white space that appears between the browser toolbars and SWF when a lesson is opened within a browser. In the image below, notice that there is white space above the SWF (just below the browser's menu bar).      Admittedly the space that appears above a SWF isn't huge and it's not something that I had spent time thinking about.   Thankfully, there is a simple solution to removing the white space above the SWF.
