Unless you purchased a tool that is only AICC compliant, which in that case, time to ditch it and get another one. If you purchased an AICC only, then you have to find a system that is AICC compliant. 2004 3rd edition?

SCORM compliance and/or AICC – there are tools out there who support neither – but that is not the norm and there are a few tools out there who also support PENS. Spell checker – sheesh shouldn’t this be standard? Should be standard. Assessment tool of some nature – may include survey tool.

Course standards are course standards, and yes, you have the option to select CMI-5 and xAPI. What I am finding is that AICC is nearly gone in the LEP space (as it is with LMSs too), so if I was you, I’d seek SCORM, SCORM 1.2, The first three are standards that every LEP should have (so say YES on the template).

Most tend to be proprietary, but I have seen a few that are SCORM/AICC and yes even PENS. After creating the courses they stay within the system, they cannot be outputted into a learning platform or system (standard, but guess what? These are the standard set of features for an online authoring system.

I would add that the “standards” in the space are not even being met in some learning platforms which is shocking to me – but more than not, they are being met. Course Standards. I was actually surprised at the number of learning platforms who either had ZERO course standards. If you are seeking PENS, LMS.

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. In the past year, I have seen a wider number of vendors including the PENS course standard, which in my opinion, enables anyone who builds courses, a streamlined and fast process for publishing into a LMS/learning platform. A robust system that contains everything from a perfect score in my learning environment functionaliy to administration (also a perfect score) to content curation, video management (with auto detection FPS) to the ability to accept course standards including xAPI and PENS. Course standard support is only xAPI (thus no SCORM, etc.).
