Apply had agreed to bury another brilliant programmer’s masterpiece, Mac Basic, to get a lifeline from Microsoft, which immediately killed it.

The Puzzler

I spent an hour with Apple on the phone. I opened up Microsoft Word 98 and began entering text. The problem seemed to be the iMac, not the keyboards. We were stymied because we couldn’t boot into Safe Mode. That takes a letter R and I no longer have one of those. I resigned myself to slogging into the Genius Bar for a fix.

The web was invented on a NeXT machine, the computer Steve envisioned and created after he was fired from Apple. Life was too short for any more of the Microsoft’s clunky interfaces, viral vulnerability, and catastrophic failure. Apple products have their own breed of problems, but I will never go back.

Some put Apple decals in the rear windows of their cars. When my ThinkPad ate its hard disk last fall, I had to get a divorce from the whole PC/Microsoft axis. The Apple menu wouldn’t show its drop-down menu. And does the Mac community of practice shield mother Apple from criticism? They are the guy on the right.
