Why Mobile Learning is a Slow March (#ATDTK Reflections)

Bottom-Line Performance

While a huge number of organizations are still just getting their feet wet with mobile, this year’s ATD TechKnowledge conference sought to get learning professionals thinking beyond our current approaches to imagine how technology in 2020 and beyond will impact learning. Mobile learning as we know it today is reliant on the “glass slab” in our hand.

E-Learning Trade Shows + Product Reviews 4 #TK11

eLearning 24-7

However, with ASTD’s TechKnowledge 2011, starting next week, I’m going to hold off until after TK11, to write on virtual worlds. Learning Trade Shows. People in the booth that actually know the product inside and out – I’m surprised on how this continues to be a problem at a lot of e-learning shows; some companies stock their booths with people who are very nice, but really do not have any knowledge on the product, beyond what they read on the product sheet they are handing you. Update: Designing mLearning

Clark Quinn

Well, it’s been a bit of a saga, but there are some new developments about my forthcoming: Designing mLearning: Tapping Into the Mobile Revolution for Organizational Performance. The book, I’m now assured, will ship on 2 February.  I’m glad to have a firm date, and the only real problem with 2 Feb is that it makes a dodgy proposition of having the book available for the very good TechKnowledge conference (where I’m presenting a mobile learning workshop on 1 February).  mobileFirst, for the bad news.

Tech Knowledge: LMS – What were they Thinking? Notes on the Go

If you are attending TechKnowledge, you will surely figure out the vendor if you are walking around and talking to vendors. The vendor explained that their customers did not want to make the change, because it would be difficult or confusing to re-learn. Module Advertisement and Mobile Learning. Their mobile learning is cool, but it uses “proprietary&# based software — their software. So you cannot create content/courses in other mobile learning tools or open source mobile learning tools and not be able to use it with their solution.

#astdTK12: Immersive Learning Simulations – Cutting Through the Hype

Sudden Insight

Summary: At ASTD’s TechKnowledge 2012, Steven Villachica and Deborah Stone defined immersive learning simulations, offered four tips for building them, and then discussed a simulation they had built together. Steven and Deborah defined an immersive learning simulation loosely, in my opinion. Context matters; people learn by doing. Keep the simulation authentic.

Designing Blended Learning Is Easier Than You Think

Mindflash

Everyone is talking about blended learning, but that does not mean everyone is doing it. At the 2011 ASTD Techknowledge Conference , Allison Rossett presented results of a study that showed that most learning professionals say that the use of e-learning is important but that very few are actually implementing it. This is certainly the case with blended learning.

Trade Show Circuit 2013

In just one month, the e-learning trade show season will be upon us.  Too many e-learning shows. I’m not just talking about here in the states, but on earth (not sure about Mars, though). ASTD TechKnowledge. The show is solely focused on e-learning and the vendors come from all over the world.  must for any e-learning vendor. As listed above, seminars are a mixed bag (just as they are with any e-learning or heck any trade show). still do not understand how a show that is tech and e-learning oriented can have such awful Wi-Fi on the expo floor?

12 eLearning Predictions for 2009

Tony Karrer

So, let's try it again this year. #1 - "Self-Directed Learning" Increases Due to economic pressures, companies are going to reduce training budgets to a point where it doesn't make sense to create content on marginal topics. Instead, we will call this "self-directed learning" and will do our best to support the workforce to learn it on their own with minimal guidance and support. #2 - eLearning 2.0 Strategy" Fails One of the better, cheap support mechanisms for self-directed learning are web 2.0 Podcasts / Vidcasts targeting mobile professionals (ex. tools.

Good to ‘go’

Clark Quinn

It’s time for me to formally announce that the site for my forthcoming mobile learning book, Designing mLearning , is now live and ready to visit. And just a reminder, I still haven’t found a better guide to designing learning games than my previous book: Engaging Learning: Designing e-Learning Simulation Games. mobileThere will be an ebook, or so I’ve been promised (you have to admit that anything else would be, well, just crazy!). More info as it comes, but you can already pre-order the book through Amazon!  So, get going!

On the road, again

Clark Quinn

And there’s quite a bit of travel coming up.  On Wed I depart to La Jolla to attend WCET’s conference , where I’ll be talking on mobile learning.  This precedes the Online Educa in Berlin December 1-3, where I again talk mobile. On Dec 13-14, we’ll be running an ITA event in Maastricht, and then on the 16th, we’ll have one in London.  If you’re interested in working smarter and the future of organizational learning, and you’re in Europe, you should try to hit one.
